Buttigieg slammed for urging electric car buying to counter gas prices

Secretary Pete Buttigieg was ripped by critics after he argued that more Americans should purchase electric vehicles so that they “never have to worry about gas prices again.”

“The people who stand to benefit most from owning an EV [electric vehicle] are often rural residents who have the most distances to drive, who burn the most gas, and underserved urban residents in areas where there are higher gas prices and lower income,” Buttigieg said.

The former South Bend, Ind., mayor claimed on MSNBC’s “Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart” that families who own electric vehicles would see a “$12,500 discount” in transportation costs.

I like plugins but not a great car for an urban person with low income because they aren't free...and the older ones that are cheap (e.g. a ten year old nissan leaf) are going to have extremely limited range. You can't buy one if you live in an apartment unless it has charging infrastructure, which you're unlikely to see in a "low income" housing complex.

There are massive tax breaks on them, but only if you buy new.

I have no doubt that per-mile registration and taxes will become prevalent. In the meantime these things are massively cheaper on fuel than gasoline, but an old gas car will still be cheaper.

And when you "rural" folks go to town to pick up 40 fifty pound bags of feed, for the horses/goats/chickens..... be sure to make that in one trip and put all 2000 pounds in the trunk.

Additionally the credits are not refundable, e.g. the $7500 federal tax credit...so if you buy a new car and do not pay up to $7500 in federal taxes you won't get the credit. The loophole on this is if you lease it the manufacturer claims the credit so they take the credit and roll it into the sales order. Leasing is not appropriate for everybody though, or available to them.

I really think more people should look at electric or plug-in hybrids, but his comments do remind me of "let them eat cake".

The switch to wireless connected electric vehicles will give those in power, unprecedented control. This was their master plan all along. Even now, Tesla is currently battling with the CCP government over control of that data. They can't figure out your daily habits, the places you visit, how much and how far you drive in a regular gasoline car. But they can in a Tesla. Eventually, big government will begin to enforce restrictions on where and when you can drive, just like they did during lockdown. Speeding, traffic violations, fleeing from Police, DWI, and traffic accidents may become a thing of the past when AI is used to control your vehicles. This will all be done in the name of safety. Those that control AI will control you.

Read an article a while back that one distribution center went with propane rather than electric. I'd like to do that for my truck. Bi-fuel conversion. Every place I go for work sells propane

I’ve thought the same. I have a .gov vehicle and it is not electric. Why is this? I cover a relatively large area and I drive a lot.
