Let's Talk About Charging Semi auto rifles/ shotguns

Is there a "proper" way to cock a semi-auto rifle/shotgun? I'm referring to one with a side charging handle. AK, SKS, my Benelli M4 here. Which grip do you guys use to cock the handle? Index finger and thumb to pull rearward? Pinky? Thumb only? Some other grip? And if so, why do you do it that way?

I've wondered this for a while, as none particularly seem "the best", but I'm interested in your input.

With side charging semis I tend to use the pinky side of my right palm to charge the weapon. This allows me to keep my left hand on the grip and maintain my sight picture.

Exactly! This I see with most Ruger PC9 the right hand shooter have the charging handle on the left side myself included.

It usually starts with a hint of shame. Then with the left hand, I firmly grasp the underside. I then crook my right index finger and hook it around the knob. I then yank like a SOB.

My school of thought is comparing it with the slingshot for a semi auto pistol. I use a 4 finger over the top grip to sling it. It put more meat on the slide than the 2 finger pinch.

With rifles it all seems similar.

For my SKS, I keep my right hand on the grip and reach over with my left, using the meat of my palm to draw it back and release. For my Ruger PCC, I just switch the charging handle to the left side so I can keep my trigger hand in place.

Left OR right side charging handle I use my left hand. I am right handed. AK = flip charging handle vertically and use palm/pinky. Whichever catches it first. Kel-Tec RFB = gun stays neutral pointed downward then pointer/pointer + middle finger. There is this though.

I hold the fore grip with my left hand and grab the charging handle with my right hand to release it. I put a shell in my semi auto shotgun and close the bolt.

I’m seriously considering changing my PC9 to a right hand charger to match my Garand and M1 Carbine. Muscle memory has it’s own particular appeal.

No matter the rifle, I like handles that protrude a little. In a streesfull reload you can use a barricade edge to rack the action.
