The thing is, there are a lot of edge cases where this may not apply. If I were a single dad of one child, for example, the equation would be considerably different. At that point I would have little or nothing to lose or live for, and thus would be very much inclined toward retribution.
We're the good guys. We're not the savages with no self control. So we refrain from beating or killing these scumbags because we know we are more valuable to our families as providers, protectors and role models walking free than we would be locked up in cages.
