If Trump wanted to shut them up he should have suggested back in June that he was thinking maybe 11 justices would be better, and he could appoint them before the end of his term.
He could have always have changed his mind after they all went on a tirade about it being yhe end of the world.
But it would be very difficult for them to flip around and support it now.
Not impossible unfortunately though as we have seen with their 180 degree flip on the China travel ban for instance.

It would be be funny and an effective tactic in an honest world, but they would merely have cried and whined and then when put in an alternate position pretended that it never happened. The stuff with the scotus nomination is a good example of this because the republicans and democrats have both been completely hypocritical--all accusing the other of doing what they would or have done and catching themselves in their own lies.
