I often regret getting rid of my 7mm-08. Stupidity of youth. Oft thought about building an AR10 in it.

It would take me a lifetime to burn the barrel out in 6.5G.

I have a 308, 243, 7mmRM, 6.5x50, 7.7x58 in addition to the three 6.5Gs. More than enough to keep me busy with developing proficiency with each

True. These days many are making some decisions based on ammo / component availability. A friend of mine just bought a really nice benchrest rig and is having a hell of a time finding bullets.

The caliber thing is truly overrated. Everything starts and ends with a bullet, hopefully a good bullet, and everything else is there to work as the delivery mechanism.
Dozens of casings variations can produce the same results so simplification of process, consideration of commonly available components than can be used in several varians can be very benefital.
But these days that things are driven by marketing, fashions and trends rifle and ammo makers who invest heavily in those marketing campaigns need to have the sales to justify such investments.
For example the latest hornady 6.5 c. Saturday night fever. It is a great caliber but some people are starting to believe it even has supernatural powers like if it was any different than the 260 or the amazing 6.5x47 lapua.
I appreciate the new projectile and powder developments but from there to say it is better at everything than the true and tested 308 that is quite a strech.
Lets say there is the shooter who wants a popular super accurate caliber with a great yet ocasional long range capability? How could one argue against someone who bets in the versatility and reliability of the venerable 308?
You see the marketing forces are strong, fashions are set and folks just follow like the sheep after watching a couple of youtube videos and thinking they are rifle and ballistics experts.
Rifles are tools that should do a great job as bullet dispensers. A lot of folks focus on the equipment but pay little attention to the training and education that is the most important aspect not just in shooting but many other disciplines.
So I am happy someone asking for guidance to study and practice with a nice 223 setup.

Understood. Yeh im happy with my 223 and will prob move on to a .308 bc I hate not having availability. But it’s interesting to see the details people get down to with ballistics nonetheless.

Also can anybody suggest a good basic tutorial for getting started in reloading. My father gave me his reloading equipment but I really don’t know where to start. I’ll take some pictures of everything I have later

If you have not reloaded anything at all in the past any of the books at the library with good pictures will work. A used ans simple ABC of reloading would be a great start.
Then from there all the mostt current and accurate data can be found online from both bullet and powder manufactures and corroborated with other sources like professional shooting websites and forums.
Also you may find some good videos that are not infomercials or total hacks trying to get popular in youtube.
Dont go and buy any expensive reloading books because they are unnecessary and full of errors like the lymans or hornady big books. A waste of dollars.
I mean if you find a used one or someone happens to give it for christmas then that is fine but dont go looking for that absurd expense.

On YT I've found Vaughn Precision to put out some pretty decent videos. I wouldn't get into videos from "professional reloaders" as they're too far down the rabbit hole for you to see them and what they're talking about may be beyond the grade you're in.

What and have to settle with bullet runout beyond 1/100th of an inch?

There's a alot of yahoos on there and maybe it's just because I find his delivery a little more tolerable than most.

I might have to check it out to see if youtube has anything of value.
There should be some good things for beginners I think.

I always steer new reloader's to pistol loading videos first, as they give a basic and not so anal and drawn out loading procedure to follow.
Case prep, size case/deprime, seat primer, add powder, seat bullet/crimp, shoot.
Tailoring a load to a rifle is fun, but not everyone has the time or ability to reload.

Not to far from my second home in Northern PA in Archbald game land 300. There is a 500 yard section.

My place is in Wayne County, the game land is right over the border in Lackawanna county.
