How To Use a 22LR for Long-Range Training

I found this to be an interesting article. Anyone out there doing this? Any additional pointers or comments?

I could get into doing something like that. I have a couple of CZ rifles in .22 & .17 that would fit the bill nicely.

The ruger 22 precision is awesome! i shoot my brothers its great! he has a luepold 4-12 which i hate, but its still so fun!

i did an Appleseed for long range 22LR, which was great.
i used my 10/22 with a 2-7 and i almost didn't miss at between 100-200 yards.
DOPE is KING!

surprisingly standard velocity ammo was more accurate than the high velocity ammos.

Would love this! Have a Mossberg .22 set up with a red dot, and another with a very decent lighted scope for this. Good practice for my .308 skills.

Pretty sure I am getting a 22lr this year for a trainer. All the firearms I own and I don’t own a bolt action 22lr.

Lots of good info. I checked out the Tippmann Arms-Project Appleseed Edition M4-22 PRO; which looks to be quite a .22, except it isn't NY compliant : (

I have a ton of federal 36g. 1260fps lying around - is that considered standard or high velocity?

Most standard velocity .22 ammo is 40g and ranges between 1070 & 1100 fps

Lucky for me my .22lr trainer likes CCI SV and Wolf Match. I use mine to practice holdovers, wind calls, and positional shooting. 300yds is a challenge with the slightest breeze.

I want to work on everything lol. I have precision rifles but really no place to shoot long range to work on the long range shooting skills. I have been looking into a 22 trainer for a couple years now. Start practicing what I have read

Something else you my fine with 22 rimfires is that they may shoot best when some-what dirty. I know guys that shoot 22 benchrest matches that don't clean the barrel until the accuracy starts to fade and even then they will just push a dry-patch though the barrel or a dry bore snake. If you do give it a good cleaning it may take a number of rounds for for the groups to tighten up.

And as far as testing different ammo I do clean the barrel and chamber between brands as the lube could be different!

Yup, This has been tried and true for benchrest shooters for Many years.Not the greatest of examples but I have a 10/22 that I haven’t cleaned in more than 7 years other than running a dry patch or two through it and lightly lubing the action and it’s damn accurate to a fault.

Very handy info. I generally stick to and use the heavier ( 46g) SV 1070 fps ammo for indoor competition shooting.

Make sure when you test ammo it's warm out. 22 groups tend to open in cold weather.

Heh. The days when I even try to make groups tend to open with cold weather. A lot of BB's and pellets get expended this time of year. In the warmth of the basement.

In the nice weather my Club has a monthly F-Class match (Belly-Benchrest) 200 yards centerfire and 2 years ago 100 yard rimfire was added! These are practice matches just to get the members out shooting together for some good safe fun! We had a local Marine shooting team (retired) come out one time and 4 of the 5 guys shot the 22's because they never get to shoot them in matches!

And as @Phauxtoe mentioned above Appleseed does what they call KD (Known Distance) for shooter's that are doing well at the shoots standard distance of 25 meters on the AQT's. So at my Club we can go out to 200 yards with larger targets.
