Situation is my Father is turning 80 and we're doing the big party BS. He is still active, has everything he needs, and is impossible to buy anything for. But I recall him talking about playing war and always wanting an M1 like his Uncles, who we all consider heroes. (He was 8 years old in 1945 so you can bet he played war games at the time.) Later, in the late 50s he was in the National Guard and carried around an M1 so he thinks they are the bomb.
I don't mind spending serious money on one and that I'll eventually inherit it makes it an even easier rationale.
Except I don't know what I really should get or how much to pay? I've seen a range on Gun Broker and other places but haven't seen many good ones in local shops. I also am not sure which model or condition is the best to collect, or will appreciate the most?
What did most Americans carry in WWII?
In my imagination I am thinking a working utility model that went to war would be the best, something with some scars but is still nice enough to handle and show off to the curious. We do want to shoot it but if more than a 100 rounds go through the gun while he owns it I'd be surprised.
Thanks!
