Looking for competition pistol

Just starting out with G19 for production USPSA, would like to do local steel challenge matches and possibly IDPA. Being my first attempt at this I figured it would be best to use what I have. As I hopefully improve, would like to have something for just competitions. Nothing crazy expensive Like an STI because I just want to enjoy the sport and not go broke lmao. Looking for some opinions or maybe somebody might figure its time to sell.
First was CZ shadow2 - (might be a little heavy)
Second was the M&P pro core- (trigger issues)
Walther Q5 match - so far this seems to be a great option ( approx. $700 )

Let me start with this disclaimer, If you want to buy a new gun don't read farther.

The G19 probably has the largest aftermarket support and you can make it into a com gun if you desire.

• Start with a better trigger. There are many out there I like Overwatch Precision.
• Internals. I like minus connectors some people like to go lower with them, but they are cheap enough to experiment with. There are also spring kits and polished parts, that change the trigger pull greatly. I have yet to mess with any of them, but the polished safety plunger is in my future.
• Flared mag wells. They are a dime a dozen, pick a reputable manufacture and try it out.
• Lastly the most important in my book but also the most expensive option. Mill the slide for a Red Dot Optic. Do your research here, not all millings and dots are equal. I had a guy out of state do mine, he did an excellent job the lead time was great. For a Dot I went with a vortex viper. So far no complaints, but kind of with I went with a Trijicon RMR.

Lastly if you are wanting a longer barrel pistol there are other Glock model you can do all of the above to.

Look at the rules for equipment and the competitive classes. Then decide what you want to do. Some classes are very restrictive as to how you can modify your gun (if at all). You also have to look at your equipment (holsters and such).

I have stock, limited and unlimited guns, holsters and other stuff. Your factory stock gun will be able to compete in all three classes, if you change specific things you will only be able to compete in limited or open classes depending on what you change.

Always good to read and understand the rules before buying a new gun.

Thank you dsdmmat, It seems production was the best place for me to start with, already had the G19, Picked up a better belt, 3 more mags to give me 5 and holster and inexpensive mag carriers. I got a pretty good understanding of the rules, But really didn't want to modify the G19 to much. Being a CCW don't want a sensitive trigger and I watched a guy have issues with a light spring and had to change it back to the stock 5.5 or 6. So believe something new is in the future

Good point togmaster and I thought about it, But thinking something with a different feel. I held the Walther and My god ergonomics is spot on. The mag release, grip was so comfortable and the long slide with adaptable optics also. So far I'm just in the early stages lol

The PACKAGE DEAL will include the P16-40, with a speed holster (with mag. holsters). eight magazines, 5000 165gr FMJRN projectiles, 4 or 5000 small pistol primers, 8 pounds of gunpowder and a Dillion 550 all set up for 40cal with an Evolution Gun Works full-length sizing/deprimer.

Jmac00 I just looked up para p16 and very nice looking 1911 especially the limited in stainless. 40 cal would be eligible for major scoring. Never even priced one out. But what the hell you can never have to many pistols lol

Yes. The shadow 2, while an amazing gun, was designed for USPSA Production Div. Too heavy to be allowed in IDPA.

I find IDPA to be super boring (at the national level the stages are more entertaining), and hate being encumbered by what i consider to be stupid rules.

I would never consider using idpa to gague what gun i use. You said you have uspsa matches. Shoot those. More fun imo. Buy a gun for that style.

If/when you buy a gun get one with a lot of aftermarket support. Hence no walther.......

I ran a 1911 for years. I was in limited 10 just cause i wanted 10 round mags and different options for mag placement and holsters. It was not the beat gun to use in limited 10 but i managed.

I then shot a 2011 open gun. Fun, but the mags where finicky above 21 rounds on the 126mm. And the big sticks where a pain too.

I needed more rounds on my non open gun so i went with a glock 34. Plenty of support. (My friend left his m&p mags home when we went to a virginia match. Everyone had extra glock mags. No one on our squad had extra m&p mags. People who used m&p mags were on a different squad and could not spare any to lend him. Obviously glock mags were available....even from me. This was 3+ years ago)

1st thing i would look for is “lower” power ammo. You can make/get some ammo with far less felt recoil......this will really help tame that 19. My 34 does not move.

My trigger is way leas than 5.5 pounds. I think my factory was 4.5 but let me look at the box again. That being said it has NEVER failed to fire due to the trigger (unless you count the time i neglected to clean it for 5-6000 rounds......but that was not from the trigger. It was from the slide not moving fully. @Gonzobird )

I run a 19 and 17

My 19 is production my 17 is open.

17 i built, heinie straight 8 sites, ghost evo trigger pulls at 2.8lbs, suarez bars and shoe, dawson magwell, kagwerks slide release, recoil rebound spring, my own designed and milled slide, trij rmr, mayhem syndicate comp and stippling and frame mods by myself.

If you are already into glock i would say go with a 34 , the key with using your firearms functionally is making yourself consistant, keeping the platforms the same. Alot of people will hate me for saying that but, thats my opinion.

My other business is dynamic weapon systems and we build custom glocks. Started as an interest for me and became something more. Shoot me DM if you have any questions about modifying

Bullet Guy, I was looking for something different, thats all. My G19 has never let me down. If a G34 is comfortable maybe that would have to be thrown on the list. My G19 is a 3rd gen and now up to Gen 5?

Those are a lot of things I didn't even think about lol. Shame about the Walther but this is why I like doing forums you get a lot of useful info. IDPA I thought would be just like USPSA except for a cover garment but didn't look any further into it. I saw a few open guns and at this point and time not a good option for me. Im still at the point when somebody has an STI all geared up next to me in my group I have to tell myself not in my division and doesn't matter lmao
I just purchased 115gr for 17cents a round. I used 124gr and didn't notice much difference a friend of mine mentioned 140 something jhp and swears by them for accuracy.

I see a lot of glocks in comps and the majority praises them, I know there are a lot of aftermarket parts too. Looks like I might have to consider Glock. So far I dropped the walther, and the M&P. Put the CZ back on the list with Glock. Maybe the gen5 will get my hand better placement on the mag release. I am trying to stay in production and get proficient with stock so when I upgrade, The improvement will be the gun and my capabilities. I will definitely look you up with questions or mods. You have already done what you really need to do. You have a gun and have been shooting in the appropriate division for that gun. USPSA has a division for virtually every style of gun. Even freaking pee-pee caliber rifles now. Anyone can just take whatever gun they like to shoot most, enter in the appropriate division, and go have a fun day at the range. You're already there.

When I started we used slingshots. Small stones were Minor and big rocks were Major power factor. Okay, maybe I am exaggerating a bit. Actually, there were just 3 divisions - Open, Limited, and Revolver. Life was oh so simple then.

I started with a G-17 with 19 round mags (+2 bases) in Limited division - Minor PF - for a couple of years. And I shot that set up because that was what I had. It was either that or a Colt 1911 9mm which was even more of a disadvantage in Limited. A wise old friend told me I wasn't half bad but I would never make Master shooting minor. I bought a used Para .40 for the Major power factor. My point being, when the gun itself is not capable of being competitive then it is time to look for a new one. And not really until then.

The federal AWB law and its 10 round mag limit brought about new divisions within USPSA. Production (called Practical Carry back then and Glock Division by some) gave new life to the 9mm. Single stack whiners got their own division with its own Major/Minor load limits. Revolver division was retained but still universally ignored when it came to stage design. Eventually "Production for Old Guys With Failing Eyesight" and "Rifles at a Pistol Match Just Cuz" divisions were added.

Today in NY there is really no strategy involved in how to shoot a stage anyhow. All the semi-auto divisions are limited to 10 rounds, even the Open race gun division. So, basically, it comes down to if you want optics then you compete against other shooters using optics. If you prefer to shoot minor power factor then you compete against others shooting minor power factor. The menu has expanded greatly but it's still all a matter of taste.

Get as good as you can with what you have to work with. If you want to change divisions then get a gun for that division. But if you start to think that a newer (better?) gun will make you more gooder remember this..............

Very good read, and I was taking it slow as to looking for something that just touches the performance level. I'm sure most handguns out there are more accurate than I am. But looking to justify another gun lol. There are so many options out pertaining to classes, divisions and pistols. Looking for a do all option if it's out there. Thank you again tapper3
