The future of the political environment scares me in this state. I'm 26, with a decent job, recent college graduate. I definitely do not see a future for me in this state. I close on a house in a few weeks, and after that I'll be taking it year by year. If things get really bad, I wont hesitate to move. Thankfully I work for a corporation that has facilities nationwide.
I would NOT want to be tied down in this state for 20 years. And I definitely wouldn't want to work for the state.
I would keep the job, save up as much as you can just in case, and start researching for a move down south.

Doubt that and it’s not due to good judgment. We have seen that white ar. I thought they would allow a few years for military service not a decade.
Different departments have different rules.
No complaining from my point of view. Pay, benefits, time off and retirement are more than acceptable.

I submitted my resume last week for a local government position. I have high hopes because my current job is draining the life from me. I'm perfectly qualified but feel like there will probably be some sort of political candidate who has no qualifications. I hope I'm wrong because being stuck where I'm at will be like missing my parole hearing.

Who knows if pensions will even be possible two decades from now with a company like that. Pensions are becoming more and more rare. What if they let you go before retirement?
I think you're putting too many of your chips in with this new company. I'd say: look for a job in the place you want to live, and bank that good money while the going is good.
Then, settle down where you actually want to live long term.

I’d go with the Civil Service job in Sanitation. You can make well over a 100,000 grand a year with overtime and retire with just about that same amount after 20 somewhat years. Ask @Airborneguy who’s a cop what more or less his pension will be compared to what he makes now. It’ll damned near be what he makes now working.
I work for the MTA. I won’t say what I take home because guys here will get their panties in a twist but it’s more than what the average guy takes home in my area and a lot more than what an average guy would think I should be making for what I do. In 11 years I’ll take home about 5000 dollars a year less than what my base salary is now and that’s not counting my 401k. Guess what? Nobody makes their base salary. No one. It’s hard to make the minimum. So that starting figure you see on how much you will make a year on the notice of examination isn’t accurate. You’ll be working 12 hour shifts on snow days. Double time on holidays. Same on your day off if you come to work. You get promoted to a supervisory position, you can add about 30 grand a year more.
Some guys here say to fly like a bird. They’ll be working at Walmart at age 60 to supplement their social security. You’ll be on the beach somewhere with a paid off house and a pension close to 6 figures if not at 6 figures.
Had I had to do it all over again knowing what I know now with all the gun laws, I would do it again. A rifle with a pistol grip isn’t going to secure your future when you are older. If that pistol grip really means a lot to you, you can also commute an hour and change from PA. Many guys do it.

I agree with @Willjr75 on everything except the fact that if I could start all over I wouldn’t do it.
Now granted of course I would because I would never risk changing anything that would effect my kids having been born, but theoretically if at 23 (when I left the Army) I knew what I know now, I’d have stayed out west.
If you’re talking NYC sanitation, you are NUTS not to take it. Even the new tier which is far less generous than mine is still far MORE generous than anything you will find on the outside. The job is physically demanding for a few hours a day, dangerous for sure due to the risk of accidents, but overall it has NONE of the mental bullshit that many other city jobs go through. Just pick up your trash with your partner, dump it at the end of your route, and fuck off for like 4 hours before leaving. I know many SanMen. That’s their day.
In 5 1/2 years you will be making way more than $100k and like Will said, put in a few extra years on the pension and you’ll be bringing home more than 10k monthly for LIFE.
Today is pay day. Two weeks from now is my last payday before all of my pension contributions become overage. My retirement date is July 1st. I plan to stay 5 more years. Granted I started before I turned 24. With my military buyback (fyi, if you were in its a no-brainer), I can retire at 45 with a 25 year pension that should be close to, if not $10k monthly. I’ve only got myself promoted once due to the way life worked out. I also don’t do much overtime or else that number would be easy to hit.
Do you have kids? If you can weather the lean years before top pay, this is an easy choice in my opinion. When I said I would have never come back to this state, I meant at 23 with my whole life ahead of me. You’re in your 30’s. In my opinion it’s better start a new job where your life is already established than completely start over at that point. You’ll still retire before 60, much earlier than most of the people around you.

Thanks for everyone’s input. I’m going to give it my best shot to try and make it work. It’s tough with the mortgage and my daughter and stuff. Will have to get rid of my lease and buy something used for a while.
I can live below my means for a while, all I care about it paying the core bills. Need to keep my family in the house. After that, I can wait. If I wasn’t married with no kids, I would try to do both. At least for a while at least.
I think I have decided that I am going to give it a go. Worst case I can go back to plumbing and pick up what I was making before I left. And if I’m still very unhappy, I can still look into moving.

If your wife is teacher she shouldn't have any problem getting hired in a southern state. Most of those school districts fall over themselves to hire teachers who were trained in northern states, particularly the northeast.
My wife and I have strongly considered moving to a southern state for the past several years. Cost of living and taxes drive me insane here. I get killed every year with my property, village and on my income taxes. And I don't even get the benefit of the school taxes because my wife and I have decided that it is worth the sacrafice to send the kids to private school. The main thing keeping us here aer our parents. Both hers and mine live in NY; were only about 30 minutes from my in-laws. I am so glad that my 4 kids have gotten to know both sets of grandparents (and one great grandmother who turned 96 last Sunday!). I never knew either of my grandfathers.
My vote would be to do lots of research about potential places you might move to. Stuff you probably have already done: check out local and state taxes, income tax, cost of living, home prices, average salaries for you/wifes jobs, schools (both public and private), weather (hurricanes, floods, tornados, etc.)
