Looking for someone to color case harden

Anyone know of anyone or place near the Albany area that will do this? I know of Turnbull, I sent them a message, but I'm not sure I'll hear back plus they are in the Rochester area. I'm looking to have my Stoeger Uplander side by side's receiver color case hardened and possibly my Stoeger Coach gun as well. Thanks!!

In my opinion neither of those firearms are worth the kind of money to color case harden then.. They are your firearms though and its your money to spend.

that being said.. Turnbull is is Rochester, and is pretty much the go to for this kind of work.

What do you figure it would cost? More than the gun's msrp?

Wild ass guess would be somewhere in the 300 - 500 dollar range a piece.. just for the receivers

you put the value on your firearms and compare it to that..

Doug Turnbull is one of the best in the world (again in my opinion) when it comes to color case hardening

At this point I'm only looking to do the Uplander. I know they are nothing fancy, budget guns, but if it's affordable I wouldn't mind doing something to improve their looks, you know?

different strokes for different folks.. Cant really fault you for trying to improve a firearms looks..

I personally would take the money and put it towards another SxS that was already case color hardened..

Unfortunately that is the nature of the beast when it comes to double barrel shotguns (and rifles if you really want to talk stupid expensive)..

grab some scrap steel and get the stuff to learn how to do it ,... i like using a butane torch and just heating it up till i get the color changes i like on mild steel blues/purples/yellows .. for simple stuff .. face plates around locks , hinges ..

Color Case Hardening is not done with a torch.. please dont do that on a firearm..

Get it done right or invest in an already case hardened firearm. They literally have to strip the whole gun down to bare parts. .

But if you do that to a receiver you will fuck with the Harding of the steel and that is a terrible idea.

I'm sure they will. I am just not sure it will be worth the price now. Stoeger's are good value guns. I believe Beretta is their parent company, but they are not high value. I didn't realise color case hardening was as involved or expensive as it is.

Your not even close to the same process.

All your doing is discoloring and softening the steel with a torch..

What are you quenching it in and at what temperature..

Because if you are just using the torch to discolor the surface and letting it air cool, you are annealing, not tempering..

And if your not heating steel to it's critical temperature (which is impossible to do evenly with a torch) you are not tempering.

So you may want to look up tempering

Depending on how much you're heating the part and how quickly it cools, you could be either softening or making the steel more brittle. In any case, you're changing the properties of the steel if you're heating it until the color changes. That's not really safe if you're doing it to parts under high stress. It will also make parts subject to rubbing wear differently - they may wear more quickly or might gall more easily.

If you want an example of how heating steel can change its strength characteristics, try using your torch to color the blade on your favorite knife and see how it changes its ability to take and hold an edge. I don't think you'll like the change in its performance.
