Caliber question. Stamped on lower: specific caliber vs. "Multi". Assume question has to do with an AR pistol with a multi caliber stamp on lower and adding a different caliber upper/bolt and a need to get this on permit.

The caliber is stamped in the picture. Other is a classification of the item at transfer. It does not need to be marked other by the manufacturer.

manufacturers are required to put a “model designation” on the receiver. The caliber can go on the barrel or receiver.

most manufacturers of AR receivers will stamp multi on as the caliber. I have not seen the marking as “other”for a model designation before. I suppose other could be a model if the manufacturer decides that is the designation of their “ATF defined firearm”

Hmmm... Just because the lower is caliber marked I don't think it would HAVE to be used for that caliber.

However, if a lower is marked "other", does it ALWAYS have to remain an "other"?

The real answer to both of your questions is

If it was my brother I would advise to have the other stamped other. If the other is stamped in a specific caliber I would not put another upper on the other other than the specific caliber.

Are you thinking of something that meets the NFA definition of a "firearm" aka something not subject to NFA (your last sentence)?

Yes I think, the manufacturer may designate the model of their receivers (what the ATF is calling a firearm) anything they like, when I did my 80% lowers for my pistol builds I designated the models of them after helicopters I crewed. So one of my pistols is a model UH-60A.

Different by county. Erie will not let you register "multi". Here the caliber needs to be on receipt, not multi. They did let me register one as a 556/22lr after I told them I have a conversion for it.

both my pistol lowers read multi but I had to supply the caliber to put them on my permit in my county. they are listed as receivers so I can add calibers to them at anytime on my permit.

I would think because the lower is the registered part if the caliber is stamped on it then that's the caliber it has to be.

Already answered. Differs by county, some allow multi, and the ones who don't you need to have caliber on receipt. The marking on the lower saying multi doesn't matter either way.

Others have. A brother of mine has several others that are not stamped other but I don't agree. If I were to get another other I would be sure to have it stamped other.

I hear you brother. My thoughts on others are just my opinion. Others have different opinions. The bottom line is no one knows what big brother thinks.

The big brother doesn't need to know. Especially if the other other is adopted and rescued from the scrap heap, shaped and molded from being considered useless into a fine example of a lady or gentleman.

I agree my new found brother from from another mother. Eventually big brother will seek to ban the other marked other owned by my brother from another mother who wants another other.
