Interesting for a soldier to hear "don't clean the bolt tail". That's like A#1 in the Army! Lol

I mostly do what the author does. I clean each gun for 10 min max, usually less, after each range session. I use Hoppe's 9 to clean and lube with Mobile 1. Switching to Mobile 1 is recent for me, but I am hooked. First off, it's free (my stepfather is a mechanic/owner). Second, I've never used an oil that comes to close to providing such effective lunrication without being messy.

I think there's a difference between basic training surgical clean and what actually has to be done to keep a firearm 100% operational under realistic conditions. Realistic conditions also vary. I'd be moly lubing (dry) in the desert and when it hits -10F or lower as in Korean War Winter or Battle of the Bulge. The lesson is you have to be aware of ambient conditions.

Back in the 40' through the 6o's lubes were also all straight petroleum base. Now we have neat molecular additives like Teflon and molybdenum sulfide (actually started in Vietnam).

It cleans good too. I use it like CLP.
