All you need to do on the M1 Carbines is get an aftermarket 10rd magazine (there is no original 10rd surplus mags, they do not exist), go to Ebay and buy the barrel band without the bayonet lug and swap out the one with the bayonet lug. You need to remove the front sight in order to remove the barrel band. If you are buying one from a dealer, just ask them to remove the barrel band and buy the one on Ebay. They are not that expensive. Now you have a NY compliant rifle.

I would not alter a historical rifle to appease herr monkeyface. Jmo.

Replacing a barrel band with another is altering a historic piece? That’s like saying that replacing a 1911’s grip panels with different wood grain ones is altering it or adding a scope to a M14 is altering a historic piece.

It is not a permanent alteration. You can still get an original one with the bayonet lug on line for cheap. That way it will keep you legal and just keep the correct part.
