Not cheap at all. The PAWS ZX16 is sort of the bottom end of transferable M16s. 18-20K is a fair price in today’s market for that.

There is surprisingly little value in used suppressors, even one that was once state of the art (the GemTech M4-96D). At most it’s 3-400 bucks used. As an aside the multiple registration is unnecessary and for the last few years ATF has been more-often-than-not requiring it to be changed to single caliber on Form 4s. You can still use the gun in .223, 9, .22 etc. with no problem even if the form says .223 or 5.56.

You have been correct on all your assessments in regards to Class 3....I had a hard time explaining to my ex wife's atty during the divorce that my suppressors were basically worthless on the used market....

I read an article awhile back that reported that people "in the know" around 1985 bought quantities of M16s as investments. They paid around $1200 each at that time. After the FOPA of 1986, their firearms seriously appreciated in value.

Those stories are out there and as someone who remembers the heady days of mid-1986 I can categorically say those stories are false.

Nobody expected the 86 ban; the actual ban came in a late night amendment from Sen. William Hughes of New Jersey (Democrat, of course) and was intended to derail the passage of FOPA. The vote was ushered through on a voice vote in the senate and IMHO likely didn’t actually get enough votes. But nonetheless it was treated as passed. All of the C2 manufacturers worked like mad to churn out sears and receivers for the 30 days until the amendment was effective, and that was it. Nobody “stocked up” with inside word of the ban, although it’s reasonable to think some people saw a ban as possible and stocked up (much like we do today).

And thank the stars those C2 guys cranked and added 10s of thousands of new machineguns and sears to the registry in that crazy 30 days. Without those prices would be truly insane.

And PS a new M16A2 from Colt in 1985 would set you back only $400. If you could get them to sell you one!
