Magnum Vs. Standard Primers

My LGS had only LMMPP primers in stock. I could care less about the "Match" part, but the "Magnum" part intrigues me. I hear a lot of old timers with much more reloading experience than I talk of primer droughts over the decades, and we are in one, and using Magnums with no ill effects. Just generally "stay away from max." I'm well below max for 10MM and .45ACP. What say you? I'm not really concerned, just want to hear your stories of using them, droughts, using them interchangeably, anything really.

I wouldn't hesitate to use them with standard loads. Like you said stay away from max loads and you will be fine. Same as I would use SR in place of SP. They work fine.

Double what it was last time I bought in bulk, but eh...seems to match (heh) Powder Valley in price, and there is no hazmat and it's in stock (heh).

I use magnum primers in everything. My suggestion is load 10 up and shoot them. See if you have any primer flattening or flow into the firing pin hole. If none go for broke.

I saw a clip that said in the next few months a company in Texas is opening a plant to manufacture primers. Also that there are only 2 other companies in the US making primers.

Sheesh, I can remember runaway primers every now and then that would roll away under the bench... no biggie.

Today, its like "Nobody fucking move! Find that primer!"

No large rifle primers are taller and do not seat all the way down in pistol cases

Like @dsdmmat said above. The only difference between SP and SR is cup hardness. Some people have experienced failure to fire with SR in pistols usually in modified guns that are using light hammer/striker springs. Some people even recommend using SR primers when loading 9mm for AR 9's which makes sense. If you think about the trigger group is usually the same in a PCC and a regular AR.
