Opinion | The myth of the "good guy with a gun," debunked by a veteran
make sure you read the bit about who he is at the end.

The real myth is that military (and I'd wager LE as well) get all this super high speed training that allows them to do what a private citizen supposedly cannot.
I know first hand that this is not true.
Unless you are SF or an 11 bang bang (infantry) or the equivalent your military small arms training is likely to be no more than bi annual qualification. In the Army that is a 20 round course of fire. So thats 40 rounds annually. I do thousands annually as a civilian. I got more high speed small arms training in one day with @OnSight Firearms Training than I did in 6 years of service as an artilleryman.
Now that I think about it more, when I was in it was 40 rounds total over two mags. I definitely remember the mags were not loaded fully. When on range detail I specifically recall charging each mag with two stripper clips. And at the pop up range I believe the course of fire was 20 from prone and 20 supported on sand bags from a fox hole. I think it was 36/40 or better got you expert? Its been some years now. Still, in the units I was in qualification was once a year with an unrecorded practice run done around six months prior to that.Rifle qual in the army is based on 30 rounds, plus zeroing. So 60 rounds for every qual, 120 per year. The 30 zero is average, so more, some less. But your point is valid.
