Sounds like they knew him from multiple contacts. Likely mentally disturbed and they developed a bit of a relationship with him from working that neighborhood.

Also you can tell they both know the suspect well. They both called him by name. The initial officer told him to have a seat while he clearly had 2 knives. He didn't think he would be a threat to him. This would also explain why he went for the taser first. He really didn't want to have to shoot this guy. This is also why he was so emotional after the shooting. He's lucky his connection and sympathy towards this guy didn't cost him his life.

Seems pretty cut and dry to me. Guy rushed the cop with knives clearly threatening his life. Good shoot from my perspective at least.
Great shot, my comments were going to more geared toward the reaction of the officer that did the shooting.

Tazer would not have been my first choice as close as he was with 2 knives. I've seen enough videos that drilled that into my head.

Not that I think this is especially relevant to anything, but just because it's stated in the title (and people are saying knives) I figured I'd point out that Sai are not actually knives. They don't have a blade, and aren't designed to cut or pierce (though generally the round bar does often have a pointy little nub on there so they probably could pierce with a REALLY hard strike, but they generally taper down only so far then have the pointy nub).
There do exist variants intended to pierce, but that's not the common ones you see.

If you grew up watching Ninja Turtles, you have to assume someone with sai in their hands have something very pointy and stabby.
Yeah, and as I said, I didn't think it at all actually relevant. I'm not saying the cop should have even known that, let alone stopped and thought, 'Well, those MIGHT not do as much damage to me as they would if they were 'technically' defined as knives".
