WFAA is taking a closer look at Dallas police response times.



Jamie was lying in his bed when he heard the footsteps. The robbers entered through the back door, just after his wife left for the airport.

“He pointed the gun at me and he said, 'Don't you say a thing. Don't you dare move,'” says the 65-year-old M Streets homeowner. “He had the gun to my head and he made me turn over on my stomach.”

WFAA is concealing his identity because Jamie is terrified the home invasion robbers will return.

The next five minutes felt like an eternity.

“I still feel the gun on the back of my head,” he recalls. “He kept saying, ‘Where is the safe?’ and I would say, ‘I don't have the safe’ and he would press [the gun] into my head.”

Jamie waited for an hour and 27 minutes for Dallas police officers to arrive. They just didn’t have enough officers to respond sooner to the home invasion robbery.

Situations like Jamie’s are happening more, and more officers are leaving the department.

Dallas apparently has a major shortage of cops. I've come across articles about it a few times.

Police departments nationwide are experiencing this same shortage for a variety of reasons. In some places, the pay is still horrendous. In others, it's just not worth it. I believe the "Fergusen Affect" is definitely behind a lot of the problem.

Having a pro-police justice department sure helps in my opinion, but the damage of the Obama anti-police years has already been done and will take awhile to undo.

College grads (the target audience now for police jobs) are at least smart enough to know that the political winds will likely change during the length of their career. Whatmay be "safe" now, likely won't be in 4-8 years when the dem cop haters are back in power.

I can't imagine why anyone would choose a career in a big city police department these days.

OTOH, an hour for an active home invasion ? All their officers were responding to something *more* serious than that ?

The message is that a vast majority of homeowners cannot be guaranteed that an officer will arrive in a timely manner when a crime has occurred. .. Something the anti-gun folks want to ignore... The law enforcement community is often stretched thin due to a variety of reasons.
Here in Livingston county an auto junk yard was often the scene of theft and the owner put up various devices to alert him at night. .. One went off and he called the police . It took them over an hour to respond. .. This happened like 15 years ago or more.

Take the laws and enforce and strengthen them to get thugs off the street would help.

I don't blame people for not wantng to be cops. Deal with assholes all day and catch shit when someone gets a beat down they deserve.

No amount of police will prevent this sort of crap from happening. If you need a cop, just say he had some gum. make sure they hear you wrong ...

Can't do that, it will disproportionally affect minorities and that would be racist.
