Marlin 336 stock

Hey everybody
Recently purchased a 1969 marlin 336.
Someone in the past messed up and drilled where the bullseye used to be and it looks pretty bad. Would like to possibly getting it repaired and maybe refinish the stock.

any help would be nice!

Are you trying to keep it original or dress it up? Just dressing it up, I would buy a Boyd's set.

Just for clarity , are you asking for information on someone to do the repair, or ideas on how to do the repair , or the unmolested bullseye part.. or any/all of the above ?

Numrich used factory original bullseye for 336. They only have used ones in stock, but that should be fine I imagine as you'd have to shape it anyway, so losing some roughed up material should be okay.

What he's referring to is a trademark inlay found in Marlin walnut stocks of various models from 1922 to ?. It is commonly reffered to as the Marlin bullseye.
If I recall correctly, Marlin said it was not intended for placing a sling swivel there, but it was not uncommon for people to think it was. That's what happened here; some Bubba .. well, Bubba'd it.. poorly.

Thank you for the explanation. I have a Marlin made Glenfield model 30A that I bought around 1980, which I believe is kind of like a less fancy 336? It has no such bullseye on the stock... Hence my dumb question. Thanks again!

Yeah that’s boogered up pretty bad . You could buy one of the replacement bullseyes that Hex posted about and fill in the remaining area with some good wood patch, and sand the stock for refinishing. It isn’t too difficult of a project.

A replacement bullseye glued in place with some epoxy died black also filling in the low spots, then shaped to match the stock contour might come out nice.

Unfortunately, a perfect fix isn't in the cards.

Yes. someone messed up the bulleye by mounting a sling mount on it.

Because your bulleye hole is jagged/ uneven. I would take the sling mount off. Fill the hole with color matching wood filler (sold at home depot, etc ). Once the filler has dried, refinish the area, redrill the hole and insert a new bulleye (if that was my rifle. )

Then drill & remount the sling mount in another spot (as shown in the above post.)

Choosing the repair method, or process, depends on how good or proper you want the stock to look. I take on projects and drive myself nutz attempting to make things right, or look right, or perfect, or as perfect as possible. Sometimes I win, sometimes not, but I always at least come close LOL.

An option would be to clamp the stock in a drill press (remember to protect the stock from clamp marks) and drill out the bad spot with a Forstner bit. Fill in the hole with the proper sized walnut plug, file/sand flush. Then prep the stock for a new "bullseye", and refinish the stock.
