I know we're all busy taking time to stock up on toilet paper at the moment, but sometimes it pays off to sit down and really think about a few things. I have views of a lot of things, and disagreements on a lot of topics, on this forum. However, going into this election, this is the piece of mental preparedness I'd like to contribute. Hopefully, some of you find it useful:
A lot is a toss-up right now. The libs could win the presidential race. The economy could tank even further. The ATF has been going rogue -- what if we all become felons overnight with even compliant firearms? What if your health declines, or that of a family member -- even outside of all this COVID insanity? Everything could be taken from you, often at any moment.
So, what would you be left with? What is left when the world is clawing for a piece of you constantly, in one form or another? At the bottom of that question is an answer that has pulled me through some of the toughest times and anxieties: character.
I'd go with virtue but that seems like a concept that's too separate from the individual -- like some platonic ideal that exists in the heavens or just in your head. Character is more personal; it's applied virtue that is backed by action. Character cannot be bought, can only be earned, and can never be taken from you by any man, in life, death, or imprisonment. That is the most basic thing which is at the core of what it means to be a good man, a good citizen, a father, husband, and so forth; that you maintain and stay true to your character.
Tonight, this weekend, whenever... take a moment to sit down and think about that. Think about your character. Think about what your intent is and the values you believe in. Think about how your actions are, or aren't, in line with your beliefs and intent. Think about how to do justice to, and build upon, your character.
