Some of the smartest people on this planet are FARMERS. Everyone I met could wear many hats...like...plumber,electrician,auto mechanic,heavy equipment operator, etc. They learned these skills from doing it all on their FARM. I really admire that. What's the skill set of bloomturd ? I assume his abilities include delegation and hosing other's to get ahead. Quite a resume.

Many farms are now using a fair bit of tech. We don’t use much on our small farm but we still use iPads for our point of sale software as well as our accounting. We’ve also used tech to connect and communicate with other farmers both locally and around the world.

Dairy farms use tech to milk cows, electronic ear tags to track cows, pedometers to track activity, temp sensors for milk and more. More and more farms are going to robots to milk cows. Farmers are managing those robots. Most farms also keep all their records electronically.

Row crop farmers are using electronic field mapping, gps, computers to control individual nozzles and rows on implements turning them on and off as needed and adjusting application rates. There are autonomous tractors and other equipment. Auto steer is extremely common. The inside of a modern tractor or combine has screens and computers all over it using gps to guide the machine as well as monitoring yields, efficiency and equipment systems in real time. The cabs of modern equipment resembles the cockpit of a plane more than the tractors my grandfather farmed with.

So not only was elitist Bloomberg’s comments condescending but they were also completely ignorant. Just one more way that he is completely out of touch. In general, many industries are increasing utilizing more tech so to make that statement of any industry is a poor choice.

I don't have any first hand knowledge of the techie farms, was brought up around small farms that did everything by the noggin and pencil & paper. I watched a few programs on the science channel that got into the newer farms. That and s friend of mine in California is a regional sales rep for John Deere. He sells the tractors that cost $750k. Travels all over the country to multi million dollar farms. Some serious tech business involved in big farms now!

Where I live there are the smaller (in comparison) family owned dairy farms. And,
2 miles from my house there is also a large 4,000 cow corporate dairy farm that has a state of the art milking parlor.
It's something else watching how they milk the cows there. The farm that I will occasionally help out with the milking is a 400 cow farm. Probably the kind that most people are somewhat familiar with.

There is also a large agricultural farm 5 - 6 miles down the road from me. They have the latest greatest state of the art machinery. In some cases, It takes me a second or two to identify what implements are what. They look so much different compared to the older style ones that I have worked with.

I can guarantee that no one around these parts has anything good to say about Bloomberg.

We visited a farm, I believe it was up around Sackett's Harbor (might have even been Old MacDonald's Farm) that had RFID collars on all their calves. They'd step up to the feeder, a computer would read the chip, and they'd get the proper milk from their mother as well as any medications/additives it needed to keep the calf healthy. It was all automated, and pretty amazing.

Mid-sixty's - I was still in high school. a farmer that I had worked for doing haying, asked my cousin and me, along with a couple other guys he had around as farm help - if we could manage the farm for a week, (he was milking about 100 Holsteins at the time), and it was the start of haying season - he said - "I really want to rent a motor home, and take a little vacation - I haven't been away from this place overnight in 17 years." He was one of the smartest, knowledgeable people I ever knew - and thru my adult life, I had to seek out his counsel and knowledge on many different matters. We fished, and hunted together throughout my life, - and hunted racoon over our Black & Tans for years together. Gosh, I still miss him. Don't complain about farmers with your mouth full!
