I just like shooting. It’s good ole fashioned fun.

And I like mechanical stuff, so guns are interesting the way cars and watches are for me. I like the click of pulling a hammer back or the nuance of cleanly slamming a mag home, the physicality of taking recoil gracefully, the zen of breathing exercises to steady myself for a long range shot. I was exercising a bit for two-gun matches before I left Texas and I greatly appreciate how it’s both a mental and physical exercise - but like driving a manual transmission, it’s both hedonism and discipline tightly bound where one is worthless without the other. I’m actually a very peaceful person with no intent on using guns to cause harm, and would love a world where none of us do harm to each other, at least intentionally. But guns combine my hippie side and my serious side like nothing else can. Western philosophy favors dividing the mind and body into separate entities, and shooting is one of the best places to really focus on getting past that. It’s a really wonderful hobby - and it’s backed by some serious intent by the founding fathers who, flawed as they were, sought to make a home which would be better than they themselves could make it in their time. We are really, really lucky here to largely have that preserved.

Joining a militia doesn’t sound fun to me. It would take a Red Dawn kind of scenario to force me into anything of the sort. Quite the opposite - was watching Paul Harrell’s short interview with Garand Thumb last night, and he reminded me that I’d like to be a great ambassador for shooting sports - free of politics, promoting safety, and connecting it to humanistic virtues which are apart from violence, killing, or antagonism. I don’t hate some apparatchik trying to corner gun ownership, as annoying as it is sometimes. I’d rather just float above.
