Wendy's may dictate to their franchisees, but there are plenty of resturants stuck paying $15/hr that aren't. If you do a good job, you may get the next generation of contracts from one of the big corps.
15k certainly won't get you 3 top of the line enterprise servers. Either you have pretty low expectations for "top of the line" or you don't buy much enterprise hardware.

- Even at, say, $15,000 for a kiosk the ROI is realized fairly quickly.
- Let's suppose that a single kiosk can replace three cashiers, each of whom will earn a government-mandated $15/hr.
- One real cashier must remain to handle non-kiosk-using customers
- An automated kiosk will require a "food runner" to bring food from the after-prep bins to the customers. The food runner will make $15/hr.
- Let's suppose that the restaurant franchise owner does not want to see upset customers in line at the kiosks, so they install two at $15,000 each.
- 2 kiosks installed ($15,000 each)
- 3 cashiers eliminated (- 3 positions at $15/hr)
- 1 food runner added (+1 position at $15/hr)
Total: 2 kiosks - 2 positions = $30,000 initial outlay - 2 positions
If restaurant is open 16 hours a day, then the eliminated positions are:
2 x $15/hr x 16 hrs = $480/day SAVINGS
In a week, the franchise saves $480/day x 7 days = $3,360
BOTTOM LINE:
The franchise owner breaks even on the two $15,000 kiosks after: $30,000 / $480 = 62.5 days
So, in just over 2 months the franchise owner is on the plus side.
In the remaining 10 months of the first year after purchasing the 2 kiosks, the franchise saves:
302.5 days x $480/day = $145,000
It's a no-brainer.

This has been done for years in other countries. Some like in China have full course meals behind glass windows self serve. Technology won't be stopped. Look at robots in factories welding, that was once a human job, etc.... Technology sucks at times.... But it's the future.....
I actually don't need a self serve kiosk, but I hear Wendy's is going to be installing a bunch. If you think you can do it for less, put it together and pitch it to them. Here's a bet though, you aren't going to, and couldn't even if you tried.
You are making assumptions of what the kiosks should cost, based on your experience with consumer grade goods, and consumer standards. You can try all you want, but you wouldn't be able to piece together a fully functional self serve kiosk that handles customers orders, credit card payments, cash payment and dispensing change, and holds up the regular daily use and abuse of the general public, and make a profit, for less then 5000$ a unit.

Yes, no way an iPad and change machine can be done for less than $5k, like many companies already use.
Those assumptions based on what is actually happening in the world allays tend to lead me astray.

why deal with a change machine? for the rare few that use cash the runner can make change. Its been this way at the airports for a long time. ipad at each table, 1 runner, 1 waitstaff can cover 3x the amount of tables.
No way is an ipad and a change machine going to cut it. A standard pos setup is going to run you about 2k. This only includes a standard cash drawer, nothing automated to handle automatically accepting bills and change and dispensing the appropriate change. I can't find a price for and automatic cash handler/change dispenser, without requesting a quote, but it will be a substantial increase over an manual drawer. Add in the physical cabinet, which has to be secure enough not to allow a grab and go from the local gang banger can run out with the til and 5k seems pretty reasonable.
Fully automated pos systems aren't new, it's an established product, designed by people that actually understand what it takes to make the complete system come together and function, and hold up to regular use. This isn't some system that you can throw together with parts from the local store. It's specialized hardware, purpose build to do a fairly complicated task.
The cash handling alone is a complicated issue, scanning and checking different denominations of bills and coins, and dispensing the appropriate change is not a small matter, one that you are completely over looking.

I think they are planning ahead, if Trump keeps things up their won't be any illegals to work for the fast food joints. I hear Juan Valdez earned 1.2 million dollars last year, he amazingly worked 3 jobs , 24 hours a days seven days a week. At least that what his taxes say.

1) Automation keeps killing jobs
2) People appeal to lawmakers to somehow protect them via new legislation
3) Protectionism ultimately fails
4) Employment is hollowed out; massive swathes of the perpetually unemployed keep growing
5) A guaranteed wage is put in place by the government for each person below a certain income level
6) As jobs keep disappearing and unemployment grows well into the permanent double digits the guaranteed wage keeps increasing until we are all basically like Wall-E
I say the above with complete confidence and not a bit of hyperbole. I don't have a time line. I'm a white collar skilled worker and even I am worried gravely about where things are going. I am absolutely convinced that so many jobs around now are dead and we'll never be able to retrain quicker than robots can. The long term implications are not necessarily bad; we'll just stop defining ourselves by our labor. Though I also, even further down the road, do truly wonder if AI will eventually see us as detritus and kick us to the side like Terminator. I'm not kidding, and there are many very smart tech minds like elon musk who completely agree with this.
