Mistake on submitted NYPD handgun permit application....

Apologies if seen on other forums.....on my submitted NYPD application for a premise permit to the question...."Have you ever used narcotics, controlled substances, or tranquilizers?" I responded with NO. I do in fact have a script for Clonazepam used as a sleep aid (no mental health issues). Should I attempt to correct my response? Should I mention it at the interview? Does the NYPD check the state prescription database for use of sedatives? What a bummer if i would be denied because of this.

If they ask you, explain you answered to the best of your understanding. It sounds like they're looking for illicit use at first glance.

If it's an honest interpretation then you had no intent in lying. Without intent, it's extremely difficult for anyone to accuse you of perjury. Worst case they ask you about it, you explain, and then look into it slightly more before approving or something.

Your prescription is an exemption. It is part of your medical care. It works like this for cops, military, and us. For example. You hurt your back in a motorcycle accident. Your doctor administers morphine in the hospital. 2 weeks later, you are discharged and given a prescription for OxyContin for a month.

You are good in that case. Answer no. The controlled substance was given to you under a doctor’s care. That is why it is called a controlled substance.

If afterwards you decide to buy and use heroine or OxyContin from the street on your own rather than under the medical care of a doctor, than you are a drug abuser and using a controlled substance under no one’s control that is authorized to control it. You have to answer yes in that case.

I think you answered correctly based on what they are looking for, but the question is poorly worded because strictly speaking of course you used a controlled substance. Of course most of us have, which means the question would be utterly worthless if it was literally finding out if you had ever had a prescription for a drug...we'd all answer yes.

When I applied for my Nassau permit, I specifically asked about things like Vicodin from a wisdom tooth surgery and they told me that nothing like that matters and to not bother to put it. Technically, the answer would be yes for nearly anyone. Best bet is to call the issuing authority for clarity.
