Gilbert is charged with Grand Larceny 3rd degree, a felony. State Police say their investigation revealed that while Gilbert was staying with family friends he stole a Walther PP32 automatic pistol, a .380 Sig Sauer, a Marlin 99 lever-action long gun, a Remington long gun with a scope, and a Ruger .22 semi-automatic rifle. He also stole coins from a rare coin collection with a value of $3,000 to $4,000.

Gilbert was issued an appearance ticket with a return date to the Town of Thompson Court on August 31, 2020, at 5:00 p.m."

Appearance tickets are the name of the game these days. Remember bail reform? There are very few qualifying offences that allow for bail. Cops show up, arrest, provide charges and tell the perp to show up to court (often times they give them the wrong day too which I have to put on the cops).

I had criminal court a couple weeks ago. Keep in my mind I'm in really small town so we don't get a lot of cases but because of the Coronavirus shutdowns we were backlogged and had 12 pending cases on the docket.

Guess how many defendants (excuse me...principles is the new term...defendant has a bad connotation I guess) showed up?

One. Exactly ONE defendant honored the appearance ticket and showed up. And unless they're showing a willful and persistent disregard (what that language means no one can tell me) I can't issue a bench warrant.

The inmates are truly running the asylum.
