Mixing Smokeless

Not what you're thinking.....although I recently stumbled across posts on another forum that seems like its not a totally uncommon practice.

Just bought some 1 lb containers. All the same powder. I have a couple empty 8 lb jugs from the same powder on the shelf. Whats your thoughts on pouring all the (8) one pounders into the 8 lb container? Would just rather keep it all in one container. Anyone see any major drawbacks?

Keeping separate in case they come from different production batches. Are containers sealed? I wouldn't put all my eggs in on basket if they came separate. It limits liability if 1 container gets damaged. I'm anal receive.

If they’re all from the same lot, there shouldn’t be a problem.

There shouldn’t be a problem anyway unless you’re anal enough to be working up different loads for each lot of powder.

Might as well mix now and have 1 consistent batch instead of 8 varying ones.

Though I've never noticed a difference between batches.

I would rather have a 1 lb. container open and exposed to the environment rather than an 8 lb. jug open and exposed time and time again every time you use it for loading. One lb. open at a time is my thinking...

What makes you think I don't use the 8lbs in one sitting?

I have done this, mainly for my 30-06 in the slow burn powder range, you are not mixing powders per say but mixing lots of the same powder. At 59.5 grains per cartridge it is easy to burn through three to four pounds of powder in on sitting. Better to have one consistent mixed lot powder than four loads of different lots Sitting in the same ammo can.

The only reason I buy 4 and 8 pound containers is price. I'd rather have multiple 1 pounders for ease of handling and keeping the powder sealed until I need it.

I use the 8 pounders but then I refill a couple of 1 Lb cans to keep in the house, the 8lb'r live in a wooden cabinet in the garage.
