Modding my ruger 10/22

I've wanted to get a 10/22 for a while now and finally picked one up yesterday. Field and stream was having a sale - 60$ off - so I bought the 10/22 walnut stock carbine(199.99$) w/ 525 hollowpoint winchester rds(30$) and a 100rd pack of solid points for a total of 269$.

This isn't my first gun - I have a ruger .308 w/ a bipod mount and a 3x9 nikon scope for deer hunting. The recoil from it is like getting kicked by a mule and the ammo is expensive as hell, not to mention bulky, so I bought the .22 because I wanted a plinker I could have fun with, as well as hunt small game.

I plan on modding the hell out of it. I bought uncle mikes swivel screws so I can put a sling on it to start off and 2 extra 10rd mags. I ordered a Bushnell TRS-25 1x25mm red dot and I may buy a scope at some point. I thought about cannabalizing the scope off of my .308 to use in the off season but it looks a bit big for my smaller sized 10/22 so that's up in the air at the moment.

I've been researching aftermarket mods and so far I plan on modifying the bolt release into an automatic bolt release.(Why ruger doesn't make this stock is beyond me...) I'd also like to replace the steel buffer pin with a nylon one(unless someone has a better option) and replace the stock rail with a UTG tactical low profile picatanny rail. I believe this U shaped rail allows for enough clearance to use the iron sights if I detach the red dot(?)....if not I'll have to search around for one that does have enough clearance.

Next on the list is to replace the charging handle with a rubberized KIDD bolt charging handle....

That's about all for now.

You can do the bolt release mod yourself in about 5 minutes with a small round file. There are lots of youtube tutorials.

A good trigger job will make a big difference.

Ehh it is your money but, IMHO everything you mentioned is a waste of it. What what are you planning on doing with it? Shooting it at the range? Taking critters with it? Do the "mods" you plan on doing to it give you anything over stock besides cosmetics? Spend your money on extra magazines.

In 1992 I bought a 10/22 like you have it cost 99 bucks back then. I shot iron sights with it for a few years before, I put a houge overmolded stock, and a bull barrel on it with a Simmons 3-9x40 scope in it. Which was around 250 dollars on top of the rifle's cost.

The Houge stock gave me extra length of pull and the right size channel for the bull barrel. The bull barrel gave me a tighter group at 100 yards with the same ammo.

Anything you "mod" that doesn't improve the function or the accuracy is a waste of money IMHO.

I would definitely get the extended mag release. It will make your range sessions more enjoyable. It's an easy mod, you can do yourself for not much $$.
I'll leave the rest of my mods out, as you can't have them in NYS!!

Welcome Sunny..... I agree with the above. I did a few for fun with kits, Pretty fun to shoot and cool to look at but in stock OEM form the rifles were more accurate. Only good part of the kits I bought were the mag ext, and the looks of them lol. Pics before safe act for the forum police LOL, oh Boyds makes some nice wood grain stocks in colors of different stain, those I like.

I am very close to you. I have built quite a few 10/22's.
For ease and consistency
get a Kidd barrel of your liking, Kidd bolt, Kidd 2 stage trigger group, Kidd guide rod assembly with charging handle. The long magazine under the trigger release is great too. You will have a 50 yard .375 MOA rifle or damn close to it
Then some CCI minmag .40gr to start. .22's can be ammo finicky and you will have to find the ammo yours likes and is most accurate with.

Whats the heavy barrel? your right looks like high cal sniper rifle. Nice clean accurate look. Bet it performs like it also. Very nice legal 10/22. Pretty freaking sharp, love it! I always liked this stock also, but don't think even this is legal in NYS ? Pretty sad and ridiculous in NYS.

It's a Bull barrel and it is pretty heavy but my son wanted to set it up like that. It's a nice shooter.

and fix that bolt catch/release so your not like hummping a football trying to to get locked back ..

Welcome! You made a good choice with the 10/22, As a Appleseed Instructor I will say they are the most popular 22 on the line at AS shoots! The auto bolt release is a big plus for the 40 rounds in 40 sec. AQT's. If you really want to catch the bug check out Rimfirecentral really good site for 10/22's and all other rimfire's!!

I did the bolt catch release, trigger job and an extended bolt knob so far. Next up is a bull barrel and stock with a longer LOP. I've been looking at the Boyde Stocks but the Houge in Doc's pic looks sweet.

A quick cheap fix would be one of those Limb-saver rubber recoil pads, they would ad about 1/2 to 3/4'' to the stock.

Yes I already have one and it does help, but it is only a temporary fix.

I'm a small framed guy so the size is actually perfect for me. I wouldn't mind a more comfortable rubberized butt pad though. I'll add that to my list.

Does anyone live near Troy or in between Troy and Schuylerville(My mom lives in schuylerville on a huge piece of land where i shoot) and wouldn't mind helping me modify the bolt piece to autorelease? I've yet to take a .22 apart and my half round I use at work(union electrician) for cleaning the burrs off of strut is a bit too big to fit into the slot on the bolt piece.

This gun is going to be my go-to gun to pair up with my BOB (any peppers out there?) Incase SHTF...rather than my .308, since the ammo is so bulky and the gun is a bit heavier. With that said I'd like it to be well rounded for hunting as well as plinking.

The mag release is one of the newer larger ones I think. I don't have any issues with it so I'm going to keep it stock. I defiantly plan on getting more magazines.

I switched to a Hunter X-22 stock and like it a lot. Also, if you want to put a scope on, take the weaver rail supplied with the rifle, toss it in the garbage, and buy a quality one.
