Glad it didn’t go sideways on ya Robin! Rural households are targeted much more often than people think for the very reason that they are more secluded and off the beaten path. A friend of mine in rural western NY had his house broken into twice while they were out of town. I know for a fact the he locks the place up tighter than a drum. He now has motion lights out around the house a couple of cameras linked to his phone and a motion sensor at the end of his driveway . It’s unfortunate, but these time call for protective measures.

While we were building the new place someone was coming up and dumping stuff in the dumpster.

Weird stuff like old furniture that you could have easily taken to good will instead.

Our site forman actually caught the guy once and chased him off.


We are pretty remote.

I'm glad this was not worse for you! I have gotten a pair of High Lumens LED flash-lights (1500 and 3200) that will temporarily blind an attacker before need of a firearm.

@Robin I'm a little late to your party but I just saw this thread. I'm glad to hear the outcome was as favorable as it turned out. With your adrenaline flowing like it must have been you maintained your composure real well. Kudos to you brother. Maybe a little training session for the Mrs on opening the garage door is in order. Thanks Swimmer. Yes an after action review is something that will take place in the near future, What you did wrong, what I did wrong, what you did right, what I did right. Right now we are dealing with another issue, so far so good.

Wow, scary stuff.

A few years back, I was woken up around 5:30AM by someone banging on the door. I answered the door with iron in hand. Turns out he had hit a deer in the road and wanted to let me know about it. Didn't really seem like a good reason to be banging on front doors at ungodly hours, but he stated he was worried we might let a dog out and they might chase it into the road or something. Which I suppose is a valid concern, but not one that would have me banging on front doors at 5:30AM.

10 minutes to wait for a cop during a burglary in progress. That's reassuring.

It's a common misconception that police will solve these sorts of problems.

They just arrive to clean up the mess.

Real SHTF situations are usually over so fast that even if they're parked at the end of the block they'll be too late.

People really need to stop expecting the impossible from the police.
