Illegal? I would think that the 18.5" barrel length vs the 14.25" barrel version would be OK. Not to mention that it is without a magazine. This SHOULD be the same as any other semi-auto shotgun in NYS. Looks similar in operation to the 590A1 except there is no pump action involved.

In New York, a semi-automatic shotgun is considered an "assault weapon" and therefore illegal if it has at least one of the following features: a folding or telescoping stock, a thumbhole stock, a second handgrip, a fixed magazine capacity greater than seven rounds, or the ability to accept a detachable magazine. Additionally, short-barreled shotguns (under 18 inches) and certain modifications to shotguns are also subject to federal restrictions under the National Firearms Act (NFA).
Specifics of Illegal Shotguns in NY:
Semi-automatic shotguns with prohibited features: A semi-automatic shotgun is considered an assault weapon and thus illegal if it has any of the following: a folding or telescoping stock, a thumbhole stock, a second handgrip or a protruding grip that can be held by the non-trigger hand, a fixed magazine capacity in excess of seven rounds, or the ability to accept a detachable magazine.
Short-Barreled Shotguns: Shotguns with barrels less than 18 inches are regulated under the NFA.
Modified Shotguns: Weapons derived from shotguns that are modified to have a barrel or overall length less than 18 or 26 inches, respectively, are also subject to NFA regulation.
Key Points:
The SAFE Act (Safe Act) in New York banned certain semi-automatic rifles and shotguns with specific features.
While New York residents generally don't need permits to possess rifles or shotguns (with certain restrictions), there are limitations on what can be legally owned.
The state also has regulations regarding the purchase and possession of firearms, including background checks and licensing requirements.
Important Considerations:
It's crucial to consult with a legal professional or refer to the official New York State Police website for the most up-to-date and accurate information on gun laws.

I know. NYS references still states that this 990 Aftershock is under 18 inches when in fact, it is not when configured with the longer barrel. Someone needs to call them out on this BS. I believe that Mossberg deliberately introduced that barrel length to get around the NYS absurd requirements, like offering only 10 round mags when you *could* get bigger for the same handgun. It's a matter of semantics and lies, from my perspective.
