Mossberg Maverick 88 light strikes

Started experiencing light strikes on my 12 ga Maverick.
Pulled apart and thoroughly cleaned everything.
Problem persisted but to lesser degree.
CRO noticed that after the first shot the safety button moved slightly to the safe position.
Pressing safety button back in seems to fix it.
Could this movement after the first shot be interfering with hammer or spring?
Anybody experience anything like this?

I had this problem for a while on my 500, which is the same setup. I fiddled with a bunch of things trying to fix it, I ended up buying a complete bolt assembly off ebay, haven't had a lick of trouble since.

The Mavrick 88 was an economy version of an already inexpensive Shotgun.
If the Safety is floating, then its defective and/or contaminated. It never hurts to call the manufacturer and ask them for advice as opposed to consulting unknown people on the internet, at least until or unless the original maker has opportunity.

I had a 500 that was out of head space right out of the box. Shoot a message to mossberg. They took care of me free of charge and even sent me a free heat sheild.

Sell it and buy a Beretta 1301

Edit: As @FP1201 says its a very entry level shotgun, and the fact that the safety is not functioning properly is very concerning. At a minimum i would follow the other members advice and call Mossberg for further direction

Worse case, buy a new trigger group if you really think it's the safety. I don't have a diagram in front of me to be sure how the safety actually works.


The other issues could be a the fp spring , or more likely the hammer spring.


The other thing to check would be the firing pin protrusion.


How old is the gun and how many rounds?

Found the problem. At least on mine. The mainspring retaining pin had slid partly out of one hole loosening the spring tension and, consequetly, reducing the hammer strike. Crazy it should have happened at all.

Found problem. Mainspring retention pin slid partially out of hole reducing spring tension and hammer strike.

Found the problem. At least on mine. The mainspring retaining pin had slid partly out of one hole loosening the spring tension and, consequetly, reducing the hammer strike. Crazy it should have happened at all.

Question now is why. And will it happen again?

The reason why was that my custom stock with pistol grip does not encase the mainspring area as does the OEM stock.
Luckily I saved the original and have re-installed.

Nothing wrong with upgrading at all

But,

For the little you would get selling a used mav88 just keep it. Keep it as a backup to give to a friend or family member if SHTF.

They're supposed to be able to handle a lot of usage for a low tier shotgun

My oldest 500 must have at least 5,000 shells through it without an issue that wasn't user induced (short stroking)


The 500 I had with issues, mossberg fixed no questions asked.


That being said, I like Beretta just fine. Or benelli.


Hell I'd like a bps in 20 ga.

full disclosure I own a 500 and a 930 but never really cared for Mossberg that much. Always preferred Remington or a "B" gun as my boom stick choice
