What loads are you shooting with it?

I've got a nicely-optimized 590a1 (good recoil pad, customized LOP) and while it isn't painful to shoot, I certainly wouldn't call it "comfortable." Shooting full-powered loads with a 12 gauge where you don't have a stock with a recoil pad (and thus your dominant hand is absorbing most of the recoil) can't be any more "comfortable" by comparison.

The only useful purpose I can think of for a shockwave is as a small, easy-to-store vehicle gun. For just about all other applications, a regular stock shotgun will aim more accurately and its recoil will be much easier to mitigate.

Well that makes more sense.

The guys over at InRange TV did an informative video on pistol-grip only (including shockwave) shotguns. They came to the conclusion that shotguns with traditional stocks are faster and more accurate to shoot and that the main reason to get one of shockwave shotguns is to say "F#$K you!" to the ATF.

The 590a1 is a different shotgun. It has a pistol grip. PG shotguns with no stocks suck. They are painful to shoot. The shockwave is totally different and is very comfortable to use.

Well the shockwave isn't totally different. Your hand is still gripping a pistol grip of sorts (albeit one that is shaped somewhat differently from a PG shotgun). And more importantly, your hand/wrist is absorbing all of the recoil that otherwise would've gone into your shoulder.

FYI, certain variants of the 590a1 come with pistol grips (attached to a traditional butt stock), but the traditional (non-PG) stock is far more common for the 500/590 series due to Mossberg's inherent ergonomics (slide release, tang-mounted safety).

never shot either , but in the 410 i think the pistol grip would be a nothing burger .. 12ga a whole different story ..
there are some nice 410 defense loads you could get .. just $$$$ for any 410 loads .. there not cheap ..
