Moving back to NY

Hey guys. I poked around on another site and I was referred to this forum by a Corpsman. Thanks Doc, always looking out for Marines. By my first thread, you can tell I am moving back to NY from CA, and trying to own a pistol legally. I researched a bunch of really cool laws that make a lot of sense (heavy on the sarcasm). I did two contracts and I'm getting out to be there for my family. I did a lot of shooting while I was in and now I'm looking to continually refine skills to pass them on to my kids. I would like to shoot competitively later on, and carry protection while bow hunting. That's about it as far as me and firearms in a nutshell. Feel free to ask any questions.

Welcome to the site. Do you have anyone in your family with a pistol license? If so you can ship the weapon to their FFL and have them hold on to it until you get your license to carry. Otherwise you could sell it in CA apply for a license in NY and then buy a new one. Depends upon your emotional attachment to said weapon.

Unfortunately, I don't have family with a permit. I don't want to sell it...kind of dumb but it was my first personal firearm. Plus I don't want to lose money on it... $600 in CA and I doubt I would be able to sell it for more than $250-$300. I'm going to do it the legal way, with a full on headache.

I hear you. My 19 is my first and favorite.
Just ensure the PA location (or whomever can hold in CA or another state) knows it could be a year or so.

When I moved here from out of state, I had an FFL from the other state, ship it to an FFL in the county I was moving to. The FFL held in for my until I got my permit. I think it cost me $50 plus shipping, but at that point it only took me 5 weeks to get my PP in Onondaga county.

Same here. My FFL here in Orange county held my 1911 that my dad sent me from Florida for 1 full year and 8 months. That's how long it took to get my permit.

I got a few calls from the FFL periodically to make sure that I didn't forget it. He understood though how long it could take to get the permit.
