Moving from CA to Westchester, NY

What is the easiest way for a person who legally bought a pistol in CA, and intends to move to Westchester, NY, to legally posses, transfer ownership, or dispose of it? It's a Glock 19.

The easiest way is to apply for a license in Westchester. After your friend gets the Westchester license, he can go back to a free state like Pennsylvania where it is legal for him to possess the firearm. Your friend had it in a storage unit there or a friend's house because he couldn't bring it into NY legally. He ships it from a PA FFL who will then ship it to a FFL in Westchester.

Once the pistol arrives in Westchester, the FFL will give him a receipt that your friend will take to the county clerk to have his license amended to have that pistol. After the license is amended, your friend can go back to the FFL in Westchester, do a background check and take the pistol home.

Real talk, you can drop the "former military" thing. And in no way that is meant as disrespect, but as respect, because I will tell you, the powers that be couldn't care less about what you did for this country (or your friend.) You are a nobody, and down there, you are LESS than a nobody because military service might give you PTSD.

In New York, you cannot legally touch a pistol without a permit. In Westchester, you'll need to own a pistol (yes, that you cannot legally touch) before applying for a permit so that a serial number of at least one pistol can be put on your permit application. That initial pistol will need to be in the possession of an FFL. So, you'll need to have your CA pistol transferred to a Westchester FFL during your permit application process. Once your Westchester permit is approved, you'll be sent your permit card with your pistol/serial number on the back and a coupon to take to the FFL. The coupon authorizes the FFL to release the pistol to you if you pass your NICS check.

In case you're wondering, obtaining a pistol permit in Westchester usually takes 9-12 months.

Semper fi brother. Believe it or not the gun laws here might actually be worse than CA. The permit process is a long and painful one. The one issue you might have is references. Some counties require knowing the reference for a number of years. Also they have to be county residents. With what phaser said that your required to own a pistol before getting your permit. Because of this I would call FFL in the area. Maybe someone here could hook you up with one and see if they will hold your pistol for you until you get your license.

Thanks for the reply. If I've already had an NICS check with documentation of it, does it speed that process up? Right now my plan is to drive the pistol from CA to PA and drop it off at a dealer to hold for a small fee until I am ready to receive it. Dealer then sends it to NYS dealer when I am ready to apply...maybe...could be a law hiding somewhere I didn't read

No. You could have a license from another state, been a former cop, been the Sgt Major of the Marine Corps and it would make no difference.

This state and especially Westchester County is extremely Antigun. We've had an NRA instructor get denied his request to have his restrictions removed. Westchester has also denied one of their own lawyers the request to remove those restrictions. He sued and lost.

If you like to enjoy your freedom and want to exercise your rights, stay away from the Fuhrer's Kingdom and move to USA instead. All counties surrounding NYC are anti-gun and taxes are high, if you work in the City PA would be great alternative to live and its a train ride away from NYC. It will take a lot of patience from you to beg the judge to get their approval for your permit, it supposed to take six mos but more . The process need some character references, AFAIK Westchester County residence may get a home visit from the Sheriff's office to check if you have an approved gun safe, you will be photographed and fingerprinted like a felon, and a Firearms Safety Course must be taken.
