Would any of the members know what the procedure is, as far as hand guns when you are moving out of state? I am beginning to look at property in the south and I will be taking my handguns with me, I currently live in Staten Island one of the 5 boroughs and was wondering if the members had any insight?

Move your guns out of state and ask questions of NY after you have moved out and secured your property. Look into the state of choice, you might not be required to have a permit. Some states allow ownership of handguns but only require a permit for concealed carry.

NY is full of shit and every county permit office/police department makes up their own rules that end at the state line.

The Penal Law requires you to notify your license authority of a change of address. Do so. NYPD will probably do all sorts of silly things like tell you that you need to transfer your guns out through an FFL. Ignore them.

I would read FOPA Firearms Owner Protection Act. It covers interstate travel but local state laws can supersede FOPA. Basically no unnecessary or over night stops. Also you must be in compliance with the State laws pertaining to all the firearms you are transporting of the state of your final destination. Again read it and local laws in every State your will be traveling in. If the State has reciprocity with NY your good, if not maybe a nonresident license could be obtained or the Utah Non Resident permit could work.

Perfectly legal to just take them unloaded in your car with the ammo separate and the handgun locked up. If you have permits that allow you to travel concealed through the states that’s legal too.

Don't travel throug NJ if you can avoid it. Hollow points are illegal there. And Jersey drivers are stupid for the most part. Otherwise take what you have, and get your residency a soon as you can

You can absolutely STOP (Hotel) overnight while traveling, you can STOP to eat, get gas, etc., as well, under the Federal Law. The real question and State law comes into place where it's a question do you leave your firearms where they are in your vehicle or can you take them into the hotel with you... lol. And just a heads up, NY has ZERO RECIPRIOCITY with ANY STATE! Avoid NJ as noted and you'll probably be ok unless traveling/relocating to California, Baltimore and a few other Liberal Strongholds, lmao!

If you are really worried, just disassemble and ship separately (Insured) as parts to yourself! (Opinion)

We just loaded everything in a uhaul and drove to AZ.

That was it.

*then* we filed a change of address with the Livingston county clerk. I now have a NY pistol permit with my Arizona address listed, just in case I find a need to revisit that shithole.

I would have to make sure to only bring "original" guns though. I have acquired some new ones that NY would not approve of LOL.

Yes that's true. Gas, food, bathroom, hotel are necessary stops.

Visiting monuments while passing through, not necessary and stops like that can get you in trouble.

Know the laws and know what to say if you ever find yourself in a position where you might have to explain yourself to the authorities.

A word of advice, if possible avoid stopping in unfriendly locations (MD, DC, NJ,) pretty much everything south and west of there is clear sailing. When in those states roughly stick close to speed limit, just don't give anyone a reason to pull you over so you are in a position where you have to explain the federal firearms transportation laws.

That's correct NY also has 0 reciprocity with other states. Ny will not acknowledge other states licenses. Luckily for us other states (TN, WV, NC, etc) will honor our NY license under one way reciprocity. Other states will still respect us even if we don't respect theirs.

And most states anyone off the street can walk into a store and buy a pistol (without any type of license or class) and use at home or the range. They typically in most states only need to get a license if they want to carry.

I suppose I should have been more clear. My intent was to state that the vast majority of states (47 out of 50) do not require a permit to possess a handgun.

Excellent that a slim majority of states do not require a permit to carry.
