Some people are hesitant to go that way. My parents were. Once they finally did, they will not under any circumstances take I 95. Not only do you not run into traffic and tolls, the reststops and hotels are cleaner and are free from low lives.

Also add that it provides more pet friendly and eye friendly alternatives. I also found that the single digit PA exits and Exits 20 to 24 in WV are convienient and accommodating to disarm / rearm in reaction to the oppressive damn stupid 12 miles in Maryland.

Easier for people in western/ central NY, not for folks coming from lower Wastechester. I’m not driving up to 84 to 81, never mind Pittsburgh, to get to the southeast coast of NC.

Then stay unarmed and waste 2 plus hours in traffic on I 95 and get to your destination at more or less the same time as going up to 84. Simple as that.

That's for you to find out. 81s takes you to Virginia. You can cut West anywhere in Virginia back to 95. 64 w I believe will get you there.

BTW, 81s also goes through MD, geography 101. If I “cut” anywhere in VA it would be east not west, lol.
My trip is about 10 hrs and 615 miles. Save me time and miles, go........
Takes me about 3hrs to get to 81 in Scranton and I’m further from Wilmington than ever, lol. 3 hrs wasted.

I didn't know where you where going. As far as time goes, how much time do you lose in traffic and how much are you paying in tolls to go unarmed? I don't live that far from you. Orange county. Less than an hour.
Maryland is a strip that takes less than 10 minutes to go through.

Here. And that's from Yonkers. Less if you live further up. 2 hrs and change that you'll lose in traffic unarmed and will be paying for that service of being unarmed. If you stay on 81 S to 64 E add another 20 or so minutes to avoid DC.

I conveniently live at the intersection of 84 and 87. I used to travel to Florida at least twice a year. When I first was going, it seemed to make sense to go 95. Shortest distance is a straight line, right? Then someone told me about alternate routes. Now, if I were to go, it would be 84->81 -> 77 -> 26 -> 95. It's only 100 miles longer but I have made it in as much as 2 hrs faster. My best time going this route from Newburgh to Palm Bay was 17.5 hrs with family. Right around 16 hrs travelling alone.
If you're going to west coast of Florida, stay on 81 into TN and take 75. Very scenic.
But I digress, apologies to the OP. I'm hoping to get out by next fall if all goes well. Looking at East TN, somewhere along the I-75 corridor.

Heading north then west then south then east makes no sense. I don’t drive in circles.
I have neighbors traveling back to Greenburgh , near the County Center,every six months, they take 95.
You live near 84, good for you in this case, not good for others. I know of no one who would take that route from this area.

So you’re making up 100 miles and traveling 2 less hours? That’s the equivalent of about 4 hrs on the road, correct? Wow, maybe I need to try this, my 10 hr ride would be a breeze, maybe 7-8.

That's because you probably travel at night to avoid the rush. I've gone the I95 way leaving in the morning and got bombarded in traffic multiple times.
Going the other way you can go right smack in the middle of rush hours and encounter no traffic.

@fartgamer ,whatever works for you is best. It doesn't affect any of us either way. I've tried it after being told to go that way once and it worked for me. I've told others about going that way and it worked for them. There are many positives by going that way. If those positives don't work for you than take i-95 South.
