Moving to another state and taking your guns

Just pack them in your vehicle and leave. Make sure they are unloaded (long guns) and all guns if going through Maryland or Illinois.

I have moved across country several times. Just pack them up and go.

I didn't need a trailer but it was a separate trip.

You can keep your permit.

Some counties will say no, but that is not what the law says. In Livingston we just had to email a copy of our new driver's licenses with the new address to the clerk's office.

Other counties you might need a lawyer.

No need to do anything at all expect unload them and keep ammo and guns separate and just drive to where he is going as long as the guns are legal where he is going.
He can keep his permit but he won’t be able to add any new pistols to NYS permit so he will have to be careful when he returns and Carries in NYS again.

When I did it, I did have a trailer because of a bunch of other stuff.

But, 26 50cal ammo cans went in the trailer along with a few boxes.

30 gun safe went in the back of the truck along with several pistols in hard cases.

The rifles and shotguns were wrapped in blankets and layered on the back seat and floor with other stuff covering.

Something tells me Westchester isn't going allow him to keep his permit but that's just a hunch.

In Schulyer, I just filled out a change of address amendment as you would if moving within NY. They didn't ask to see anything.

When I moved from Chautauqua county to Florida permanently I just packed up the unloaded guns in the truck, in the safes. Kept two loaded ones on me because I already had a Florida CWP . . . a few months later I received my forwarded renewal letter from the NY State Police telling me what I had to do. I called the Chautauqua county permit office. They told me if I no longer owned property or had a job in NYS my permit was no longer valid. If I surrendered it, and decided to ever return to NY Hahahaha I could get it reinstated. Nobody asked about the guns.

Conversely, when I moved into NY, I was required to get a permit first, then have my guns sent FFL to FFL only, so they could be added to my permit. Had to pay for new background checks for guns I already owned . . .

Depends on how much he wants it.

They can make it a PITA, but I bet if he gets a lawyer involved they figure it out.

When we moved we packed everything with clothes.

Why use newspaper for dishes. They all got sweaters and sweatshirts.

Socks work great for glasses

Blankets, towels, etc.

I had a bunch of cases. A few of the foam lined boxes like you get from PSA. Some just got wrapped in towels and put back in the safe that was laid on its back in the u-haul and had all the empty space filled with other stuff.

We even brought some houseplants in that uhaul LOL.

also be on the look out at truck stops .. and around town .. for like United Van Lines .. semi moving trucks ..

sometimes you can get some free moving padded blankets from them

I put everything in soft cases, hard cases, original boxes and gun socks.

If I’m not mistaken they need to allow him to keep his permit. He will have to update the address and go through the bullshit required. If it’s a renewal and not a recertification I’m not sure how he will complete the training requirement unless he does it while he is back here. He will then have to decide if it is worth it or not and how much time he will spend in NYS.

I had a Westchester permit and I then moved to CT

Westchester would not let me renew under any circumstances - argued plenty with them and also provided info confirming I was entitled to keep it………..but they simply refused to even look at anything

And that is even with a Cabin in the Adirondacks - so still NYS

Only way around it for me was to transfer my permit to Oneida County who were happy to allow me to keep it - I do however need to renew it annually as Oneida county is not my permanent residence - that is a PITA

I also have CT and FL CCW permits

The guns are your property. Just pack them up and leave and when you arrive in your new state call the nys governors office and the superintendent of the state police and tell them both to eat shit !
