Moving to NY

Hey folks,

Looking for some advice, yes I know.... stay where I am don't come to NY. Used to live here and I coming back for work. Used to have a westchester license but no longer valid since I moved out of state.

When moving back should I give up my items up to an FFL before formally applying for the permit (Orange County). Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

Any handguns will need to be transferred to an FFL until you have a valid permit. Rifles or shotguns I don't think you need to worry about. Just remember there are laws regulating certain types of rifles and magazine capacity in New York

IF you're planning on bringing Handguns back, you'd better look over the new Licenses process, the one you will have to pay for and complete before you'll get a Licenses. As for the Handguns, your best bet is going to be finding a Dealer that will receive them from you and sit on them until the Licenses is processed, unless they're sentimental, rare or high value, then I suggest selling them or leaving them out of New York.
It will not be Legal for you to bring them to NY and just turn them over to the Dealer of your choice (and a LOT of them have closed up Shop because of the State's heavy handed intrusiveness) they would have to be surrendered to a Law Enforcement Agency, and you can bet that'll be a shit-show.
Anything that classifies as an "assault weapon" is prohibited (mostly semi-automatics) specifics can be guided through.

And don't forget the BS restriction on magazine capacities, or other firearm related asinine restrictions like no threaded barrels, etc. When moving your pistols into New Yorkistan, watch out for magazines holding over 10 rounds! And no homemade "ghost" guns either!

Also, you might check to see if your old permit is still valid before you apply for a new one. Just because you left NY for a period of time doen't necessarily mean your permit went bye bye.

If you have a family member somewhere that can hold them until permit process is finished thatd prob be a much better way than an FFL or PD.

Just remember you now need a semi auto rifle permit in NYS as well. Be familiar with the safe act, concealed carry improvement act, oh and stay where you are because no dollar amount is worth coming back to NYS.
You now need an 18-hour training course before you apply for a CCW. Renewal or recertification is every three years now and if Orange County is a renewal county you’ll have to keep taking the 18-hour course every time you renew.

Why would your Westchester license not be valid because you moved out of state? Is that a Westchester thing?

Leave your handguns with someone in the state your moving from, get your NY permit back and then add your guns before you bring them to NY? The FFLs going to charge you to transfer them back.

I wouldn't trust NYS to do the right thing, ever. The suggestion of leaving them behind until you can get your New York CC permit is probably worth researching and a better option. If you need to bring them into NY, I'd find a friend or relative to hold them until you can legally possess them.

As I type this my disdain for NY's gun laws makes my blood boil!

I have a friend who moved back to NYS and turned his pistols in to the State Police till he got his permit. When he came back to retrieve them there was no record of them being turned in, despite him having a signed paper listing his pistols.

If you are in a free state now, leave them with someone until you get your permit and then bring them in.
