On Twitter public figures used to be able to verify an account and they would get a blue check mark by their posts telling you that the "William Shatner" that posted it was the *real* William Shatner and not just some 12yr old who made the account first.
Then Musk said "that should be available to everyone, not just the glitterati" and he instituted a new policy where anyone could pay $8 and get the check.
The beautiful people lost their shit because the blue check used to be reserved for "important" people, and now it didn't mean you were special, just that you were really who you said you were.
