Muzzle flash with 223 - How can I reduce this?

I recently started reloading .223 for a 16" barrel rifle.

I've used Hogden H335 (24.5gr) and 55gr Hornady FMJBT projectiles and gotten average speeds around 2878fps with good accuracy (at a 25 yard indoor range). BUT...I have one heck of a muzzle flash.

I have not noticed such a muzzle flash with factory ammo loaded with similar weight projectiles (running at a similar velocity to my reloads).

I suspect that the H335 is not burning completely in my 16" barrel. If this is the case, what other powders would you reloaders suggest?

Recently there was talk of some kind of can that threads on and diverts the noise and flash down range that is suppose to be NY legal. Maybe it was Bulletguy that posted it, ah me, can't remember shit, I miss my mind, Hah!

Ive had good luck using TAC powder and just picked up some CFE223 which I've read is really good stuff including efficient powder burning.

supposedly the Witt clamp on doesn't mark up the barrel the way a set screw adapter would. I dunno firsthand, but may find out one of these days.

A threaded barrel would have been cheaper than my crowned barrel in the first place. But....thanks?


BTW - A clamp on muzzle device scares the proverbial crap out of me. If the device is just a bit off center when fired........(I don't want to think about it.)

I agree about the off center thing. That's a very valid argument.

But if this is used, your barrel still has no threads. It would have to be permanently attached to be considered part of the barrel.

19 grs. of IMR4198 pushing a 55gr. Fmj. @ 3000 fps. and almost full burn out of a 16 inch barrel.

That's my standard loading for .223. People that have shot my ammo say it has a little more recoil than Mil spec ammo.

Different powers may help.

Where are you? I will take/buy it. I love 335. I get sub MOA groups with it over horn. 55gr crap projos.

I can't argue with the propulsion performance. I'm only playing at 25 yards indoors. It works great. But the rifle spews like a movie dragon.
