If one wants a muzzle loader, what is the best one gun to get? Modern/traditional, rifle/shotgun, single/double barrel?
It's like choosing your favorite flavor but what I've read keeping them clean helps in their performanceIf one wants a muzzle loader, what is the best one gun to get? Modern/traditional, rifle/shotgun, single/double barrel?

The modern in type muzzleloader, of which I no next to nothing is inexpensive and available everywhere guns are sold, including mail order.
If you want to experience the true romance of yesteryear but aren't quite sure you will like the whole experience, there are a lot of cap lock and some flintlock guns for a reasonable price like the TC Hawkin and the Lyman Great Plains Rifle both new and used at reasonable prices, also Pedersoli offers both cap lock, flintlock in both rifles and shotguns.
If your really into it and want something that truly represents the guns of our forefathers then there are fewer places to obtain them them Guns: flint, percussion, & early cartridge guns - Track of the Wolf is one of them. If that is the route you wish to take and you think I can be of some help feel free to ask.

Used black powder rifles can be had for very little money. They won't be fancy; plastic stock, crappy sights, paint. Cheap way to get into it, then fine tune as you discover which way to go; round ball, percussion, flintlock, caliber, intended use, etc.. My first was a kit, came out great, and was a blast to do.
