My boy is Turning 18

So my son is turning 18, it has been a tradition in my family to get a shotgun. Me, my brothers and their sons have gotten one.
18 at the end of the month, can i get him shotgun in his name?
Can he go fill out the 4473?
we live in Rockland NY.

Gun Laws are too complicated and onerous to keep up!

He should be fine to fill out a 4473 for a long gun. So should you. Although, im not quite sure if you can buy it, with intent to give it as a gift as one of the questions on the 4473 asks if the purchase is for you. Now, I believe you can gift a long gun to an immediate family member without a bgc, but i have no idea how long you have to own it before you can give it to them..

But, what you do is your own business and FUAC.

seems like a lot of work for a simple problem. at 18 he can fill out the 4473 himself. or you can buy it for him and since he's your son you can hand it right to him. doesn't matter. If anything were to happen to either of you do you really think anybody would try and claim your sons guns as their own because when dealing with non-nfa stuff that's the only reason i could see doing a trust.

When I bought my Glock 26 at Collectors, my dad asked if he can use his card to buy it for me. They said yes. They told us it isn't a straw purchase unless he buys it for himself to give to me. As long as I'm the one filling out the questions on the NICS form, I'm the actual buyer according to the law.

Take that with a grain of salt as some FFL's interpret things differently.

Just purchased a rifle this weekend for my son for his 19th birthday. Went to my local FFL and told him exactly what I was doing. I’m not breaking any laws because he is an immediate family member, so “they” can choke on a copious amount of dicks. Just fill out the permission slip like you were buying for yourself. Completely lawful.

Yeah pretty soon he'll be potty training @Phauxtoe lol. My boy is going to high school next year I swear dont know where the time goes!

Back OT congrats @Phauxtoe that's awesome. My dad wasn't really a gun guy but bought me a 22, shotgun and lever gun when I turned 16. Funny thing was I never shot with him. Never. He passed a few years later and I will always treasure those guns. Good thing you're doing for him.

I miss the good old days when you could just buy him a Streetsweeper, now that was a fun shotgun.
