Last week my sister called me and asked me about helping her get a firearm for self-defense. I asked her why she needed a gun now. What was going on?
She said things are getting "crazy" out there (in this country), with the election, protesters and riots. I was thinking to myself, wow, things must be bad if she's asking about guns now. She never inquired about them ever before.
So I told her now is the worst time to be trying to purchase a gun. Especially in New York. I told her getting a pistol permit/lic. is ridiculously difficult here especially on Long Island. Even getting a rifle or shotgun is now a pain in the a$$. With the new background check waiting period.
I told her the best bet is to get a shotgun for home defense. I have a Mossberg Maverick 88. I said for her, it would be better to get the 20ga version w/ a youth stock. IMO easier to handle.
Well I called around to different gun shops on the island (Suffolk Co). Not surprising most didn't have the 88 version I wanted. And there is a long back order for most guns.
One gun shop had a Mossberg call the Shockwave 20ga 590 (ideal for H.defense) but they wanted $830. More than double MSRP.
I call my sister and told her the cost situation and said I'll let her "borrow" one of my rifles if she really needs one.
It's a sad sad state we live in when a law abiding citizen has difficulty providing a means for self-defense.
