As recently as two months ago or so my local walmart had a ton of the cheap (not maverick but some other brand) 12 gauge for like $200/piece, even as everything else was substantially sold out. I've a friend who also keeps talking about it but has never gotten around to it for some reason.

Maybe they were either a H&R pardner or Stevens shotgun. They're usually priced in that ball park. I've handled both at a LGS last yr. The H&R was heavy and cycling is rough. The Steven was a little better ( a maverick is better than either.) But for the money/ for someone that wants a shotgun for HD it isn't bad.
I would normally say save your (buyer) money and buy a Rem 870 or Moss 500 or some thing even nicer. But given today's atmosphere (panic buy) you may have to grab what ever you can find if you're shopping.

I actually do not think I'll ever suffer a home invasion. I have a ton of cameras to catch shenanigans outside like a car break in or people knocking over my mailbox and thinking they can get away with it, but if a security system is breached and the alarm goes off at night then what? I hope her husband at least has a machete under the bed, which can be had for $20-30 and would do a nasty job on any home invader.

A semi- .22 would be a good fit for anybody who feels like a shotgun is just way too much (though I think many who do think that probably could have that trained out of them quite quickly). It can also be hidden from their daughters behind some boxes in the basement. Just there in case things go really south.

My feelings on .22lr for self defense go something like this:

If I'm going to end up in hand to hand combat, I'd prefer my opponent had a couple rounds of .22 in him than nothing....

I have an h and r. Chinese copy of an 870. Most parts work. Put a wolf spring and a delrin follower in it. Very slick. Built like a tank. Been a good gun.

For sure. Ill take a .22 over a clenched fist and harsh language any day of the week.

Yes, My second rifle I get after getting the .22 Marlin was a Hi-Point 9mm. It is a great carbine. Unfortunately NY un-SAFE act say it's an "Assault Weapon". I took it out of NY to my 2nd home in a FREEDOM LOVING state.

I have a ruger pc. I am grateful I was able to grab it for under $450 before all this nonsense.

Heck, I have a 20 guage mav 88 cruiser I paid $189 for in January. Probably won't see those prices ever again.

Been buying whatever I see on shelves for this exact reason. Low brass for practice, high brass for cut shells. I’m a touch unsure if my guns can shoot steel or I’d have a boatload of that.

I have a sister that was interested in buying a shotgun. She is small and thin so I took her to the range so she could try a number of weapons. The shotgun was too much for her but she did pretty good with my .22 rifle. I recommended that she get a .22 rifle instead of a shotgun but she didn't want to buy anything. She and her husband are not very keen on having weapons in their house with two daughters. Instead they are going to get a security system. I told her that's fine but what are you going to do in between the time the system alerts the police and the time the police actually arrive? She didn't have an answer. I commend her for at least starting to think about it but apparently she believes she will be safe in her home.

Because most people subconsciously project others with having the same civility that they have themselves. Because she would not trespass on someone’s property because they have a security system she believes that others would do the same. Most people refuse to believe or acknowledge the savagery and brutality of man until it is beating their skull in and trying to kill them.

A well-placed .22 round (or 10) will definitely do the trick. A couple friends and I carved a few pumpkins last week with some hollows to gauge the expansion. Good times!
I am thoroughly confident that with a semi-auto and a full magazine, a single intruder will be sufficiently weakened if not permanently retired.

i carved a bowling pin with my Mosin M44 .. it was lucky it went down ..but holey crap bowling pins can take some hits and not blow up in pieces ..
.. steel core spam can stuff .. im glad it went down ... or i would have to use the pig sticker on it .. lol

im dialed in for deer hunting with it now

i the same .. what is the diff in barrels for steel shot ?? ..

isn't the shot held in a plastic wad... lead or steel ?? seams silly ..

in a shit show id shoot spark plugs down my moss 500 if that's all i had

PS . i shoot slugs down my full choke single shot.. 20ga .. kicks like a mule .. but works and ready for more ..

Steel should be fine provided you don't use a full choke I believe.

The issue with steel shot is that it will not compress/deform (within the wad) like lead does when it hits the constriction in the bore and possibly ruin the barrel.

Shooting Foster type slugs in a full choke is fine as the slug will compress, I have done it many times in my full choked Ithaca shotgun. What I have read says that shooting sabot slugs in a full choke is not good as the sabot will not compress and can possibly ruin the barrel.

Went to a small lgs in my town, basically its a 10×10 room. Hes been unable to stock anything in quantity to keep up with demand... I foolishly thinking my 2k rounds for each rifle was plenty before the spike... A few trips to the range and club and here I am down to a few hundred of each round... And ill be damned if I'm going to be gouged by gun shops charging 45 bucks a box for blazer 9mm, or 1$ per round bags of mismatched ammo... I honestly laughed at the guy behind the counter when he told me the price for the blazer... Ill keep going to my Walmart and get 20 rd boxes of .308 for the AR10 for 15 bucks.. for what ever reason No one buys the ammo at my Walmart always stocked...

22lr is definitely not as reliable as centerfire in a semi, but my mossberg semi I got for $99 a few black fridays ago is extremely consistent. It's very rare that it doesn't cycle a mag properly.

EDIT: This is with a bunch of kinds of ammo. Of course, the sub-sonic stuff absolutely will not cycle, not once, not ever.

Have I just been that lucky, or is a Rossi that good? Shoot through multiple mags with no issues. Consistently 40 gr round or 36-40 hollow. It definitely pays to know if you have cycling issues with your desired ammo BEFORE an intruder walks in!

It depends on the ammo shot with .22s. My 795 almsot never hiccups with cci mini manga or similar.

Bulk pack 333, 555, rem, even fed bulk pack is usually garbage. Inconsistent, loose projectiles, etc. Still, fine for plinking, but not hunting or extreme cases more.
