Ive seen many front windshields tinted dark as hell here. And guess what they show the officer when stopped.....that prescription from the doctor. Of course they find something else to ticket you for but the paper does work.

So, from your pictures you posted, the F-350 and the Dodge pickup wouldn't pass because the front windows are too dark, the SUV would pass because it's an 'MPV', and the back windows can be dark as you want as long as you have both outside mirrors (front windows are clear enough), and there's no provision for 'motor homes' which is what the last vehicle is classified as....However, undercover police and fire vehicles are exempt, so the F-350 and/or the Dodge might be an undercover trucks, which would pass....

The only part of the windshield the can be tinted is from the top of the windshield down to the 'AS1' line, which is about 6" from the top. That's the only part of the windshield that can be tinted.

so is there anything stopping the average Joe from throwing the mechanic an extra $20 to pass it. Forgive me for not knowing, but could it somehow come back to the shop that passed the vehicle? Is there a way police would be check that and making a federal case out of it. I know someone who has tints and their inspection is up this month.

Sure, give it a try. Drop a $50 on the local gun store to skip a NICS check too. I'm sure they'll risk their license for that amount.

that's a little different. I HIGHLY doubt they will pull a shop's license if for some reason it made it back there that they waived some people's tints. My question is how would / could it get back to the shop. Not, that shops won't be doing it. Because I for one, know a dozen shops in NYC that probably will do it, just like I can rattle off gun shops that are doing things that they're not supposed to be doing. Maybe things are a little different in Central NY, but down here not everyone plays by the rules.

There's a number on your inspection sticker that's tied to your registration as well as the shop.

Spoke to my stepfather about this. He said he won't do it for ANYONE. For the record I have never had after-market tint and didn't intend to, I was just wondering what his thoughts were.

Every car and truck I ever had except my 76 formula had tinted windows. That includes my present BMW.
My 87 Dodge ram charger came factory with tinted windows. Cant remember what percentage, but I do remember that unless you walked right uo to the windows you could not see in.

Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum, but after reading all this, I want to add the research I've done on this:
1. A letter from your doctor that has one of the three diseases mentioned in a prior post must be submitted along with a copy of the registration of the car you wish an exemption on. THE REGISTERED OWNER DOES NOT HAVE TO BE THE ONE WITH THE DISEASE. IT CAN BE A PASSENGER OR ANYONE YOU LET USE YOUR CAR. Sorry for the caps, but if anything is read on this post, I thought that was most important. Two of the diseases that garner you an expemtion sticker, you basically spontaneously combust like a vampire stepping into in the sun if you have one. The third "severe drug-induced photophobia", means that your drugs (even something for allergies or headaches, according to the drug list) can be used as the reason...as long as your doctor agrees that this is the cause of your "severe drug-induced photophobia."
2. The law states that if the windows can't be rolled up, then the car fails, so forget pulling the fuse. The thought of removing the windows completely until after inspection then reinstalling them had brought the question to mind, but I think that's subjective to the shop you choose to inspect it. The one I spoke with said that one shop in my area already got in trouble because the car owner told the officer during the stop that he had just gotten the sticker yesterday and the tints were on. Every shop is on high alert because of the integration of this new rule into the NYS Safety Inspection. Nobody wants to get pinged.
3. The test is subjective to the shop.....meaning that it states in the rules that they do NOT actually have to test your windows if "the windows clearly allow at least 70% VLT". There are two types of testers that a shop can use, and they HAD to be purchased by the shops. Cha-ching for the test equipment manufacturers.
4. There is a sticker that the state DMV will issue to you if you can pass their ridiculous hurdles and it must be affixed to your window. I haven't seen one yet, and am not sure what they even look like. I only know of one person who has one..and he works at a shop.
5. I have a letter from my doctor and I use the tints to keep from having to use my sunglasses in the car. Even with them, sometimes the bright light coming through the windshield will make me squint a bit. The reason I can't use my sunglasses is that they're so dark that I can't see my instrument panel when I'm wearing them. The tints allow me a reasonable solution to this problem. I've been wearing dark shades on my pale green eyes since I was about 14 and I doubt after all these years that my eyes will "adjust" to bright light unless I go blind.
6. I am an outside salesperson. I spend a HUGE amount of time in my car. Most manufacturers of newer vehicles are already tinting their stock glass at 70'ish percent. You can verify this by the small imprint on the window glass itself. Even with this tinting, the dangers of the sun in prolonged exposure can lead to an increased risk of cancer. This has been proven in study after study and the people who drive as much as I do are in the highest risk pool. My tints add an extra layer of protection.
7. Tint laws are actually nothing new. The law has been in effect in NY since 1991. If it was such a big deal, there would have been more of a push to change it before now. Twenty-six years to deal with a problem? That's not really a problem.
8. There is one way around it....if you own a vehicle that is older than a 1991, and you've had your windows dark since then, you're Grandfathered. After that, if you've had tints with lower than 70% VLT, you've been breaking the law all that time.
9. One of the main issues I have about this is that it is the State's way of deflecting the concerns of a few people in some areas who had enough of their representative's ears to get a bill drafted that would shift the issue off of the police (who if they really had a problem with it, they would have been much more vigilant about cracking down on it) to the inspection stations by including it in a SAFETY inspection. There is nothing in my opinion that causes a safety concern for the public at large for a car to have tints (and I'm not talking about those intending to do illegal activity...they're not going to obey the law anyway, so this sentiment doesn't apply to them...and their inspection stickers are probably ill obtained too).
10. The protection of our 'boys in blue'. I believe that our LEOs have a right to be protected as well as someone who goes searching for bad people can. I agree that tints on a car can be an issue during a traffic stop or when a car is sitting idle and occupied. What I don't agree with is the wholesale dismissal of the need for them in certain circumstances that are greater than the diseases listed on the exception form. The law should be removed from the SAFETY inspection and the Window Tinting Law of 1991 be amended to state:
"If a car is approached by an officer during a traffic stop, or while parked idle with occupants, it is the responsibility of the operator to immediately lower all movable windows to a down position, regardless of the circumstance (weather, etc.) so that the officer can clearly see inside the vehicle. If the operator refuses to comply, this would be considered a suspicious activity and the officer would be within full rights to act accordingly (detain vehicle until back up arrives, approach with service pistol drawn, etc.).
Some may think of this as a "give-back"..and that's fine, in exchange for the tints. I think it's common sense that if you are going to have an exception, that you may have to make an exception.
Lastly, those who have SUVs or just rear windows tinted....you're on the chopping block too. There is a bill introduced that is looking to remove the exemption from those types of vehicles too. That means no more privacy glass...period. go to www.nysenate.gov to research what they're up to and make your voice heard...please. People are leaving NY faster than they are coming in, and that's because of things like the gun control laws, Cuomo's call for a new NY Constitution and the tint law being misplaced. It has to stop if we're going to maintain our motto of "The Empire State".

As far as your 2nd statement, I have my inspectors license here in NY to inspect cars, and if the window isn't there, it will fail as well. That's not subjective to the inspector or the shop inspecting the car, that's right in with the inspection regulations. So, removing the window isn't going to solve anything. The ONLY vehicle I can think of that would probably pass inspection without a window is a Jeep with removable doors...
As far as your 7th statement, you're right, we've had tint law's on the books for years, the difference now is they were never part of inspections until January 2017 (this year), and it's made the jobs of shops a lot harder when it comes to inspections.
And lastly, I have both a Suburban and a Tahoe with privacy glass on the back and rear windows, and they can kiss my white ass if they ever say I can't have it anymore, because that's all factory, and I would refuse to spend the money to have all those window's replaced.
I think maybe if there was huge non-compliance on inspections and window tint, that would be one way to show NY we don't want these idiotic laws....

I assume that after 8 months of andy's ridiculous tint inspection enforcement approx 2/3 of NY vehicles (should) have been inspected. I see just as many NY cars and trucks with tinted windows as I did before. I'm not hearing of folks getting ticketed with any more frequency than previously. I must be the only dipshit to have my tint removed. Even my kid questioned my rebellious manhood when I had it done. God I really despise FUac.

Considering the level of tint on my Audi and passing inspection and never getting pulled over and all the cars I see on the street darker than 70% that are inspected, I am guessing nobody including LEO could care less about this law. My Subaru that is my daily driver was tinted 35% when the inspection law went into effect so I panicked and had the windows retinted at 50%, which is still illegal. Nobody ever bothered me and both cars still pass inspection. So it seems like all the inspectors and LE except for NYC in this state could care less. This may not be fact but this is what I have observed where I live and travel over the last year this law has been in effect.

The thing is that you have to go looking around for a shop that is willing to risk their license to pass you. I'm sure there are many out there. I don't have time for that nonsense to go looking around for them.

DMV used to give a sticker for the window for such exemptions. Check if they still do because it was once required for the aftermarket tint exceptions
