Thats all good,,,then explain? His barrel twist rate isnt really rated for that light of a bullet,,,,,,so what would make his gun more accurate with that bullet? Please explain.

Flat based bullets might be more accurate when the weight of the bullet matches the twist. Long range accuracy,,,boat tails are more accurate if you look at ballistic coefficient

Well... to start, the quality of the barrels will be a factor right off top. So will the composition. So if we took 2 barrels that were the same twist rate and length from say one budget barrel company and one highly reputable company that would play a big role. So would the barrels' composition. A stainless barrel will shoot different vs a chrome lined vs a melonite vs parkerized barrel. That's just one of the things that would be from the aspect of the rifles themselves. Then if we start looking at the ammo itself then we would really have to talk about way too much stuff. And this is especially true with commercial ammunition. We are talking what the type of powders, how much powder, what type of primers, seating depth, crimp, brass, trim length, bullet weight, bullet composition, bullet type etc. Even after all of this we are only scratching the surface. If you want all the technicalities of that stuff mek would be the guy but I honestly don't have the desire to go way into all of those factors.
So you see to even begin to make a fair comparison you would have to start with at least two nearly identical rifles shooting the same exact ammunition with varying bullet weights. To start off with 2 different twist rates you are doa for testing. And again using factory ammo would further complicate things as you don't know the variability of the charges and bullets etc. Best case scenario is to use reloaded ammo where everything is a known quantity.
ETA: muzzle devices will also play a factor
Quality of barrel is not going to make one bullet shoot better than another out of the same barrel.......reaching...If the barrel is shit none of the bullets are going to fly the way they are suppose to............I would suggest staying away from the 2 barrel thing,,,,,this kind of defeats the point of what we were discussing.
Different powders will make a difference, seating depth will make a difference,,,,like you said
but, but, but, but so will weight of the bullet,,,, because different weights of bullets in the same caliber, which have the same diameter are altered by length,,,,just like I said. If a 53g flat base bullet shoots like shit and the 53g boat tail shoots great its more then likely because of the length of the bullet,,,the boat tail. If a 55g flat base shoots like shit but the 53g boat tail shoots great its more then likely because of the length of the bullet.......................
This isnt a positive of why one shoots better than the other,,,,its just something I have come up with while reloading all the bullets I have reloaded and it makes sense.
Its not always cause one bullet is manufactured like shit and the other is manufactured great.
You obviously have this figured out if you're pointing to MEK to give me an answer to why I'm wrong.

Not every bullet stabilizes the same way. With that Wylde barrel I have and it's 1:7 twist I am not getting the accuracy I want with 55 AE, but I seem to get it just fine with the heavier BTHP's.

I agree. Not every bullet stabilizes the same way which is why I was saying that you (as in JamieZ) can't just say ammo is more accurate just because it's boat tail. There are way too many factors at play even outside of the ammo itself.

Yeah I totally agree with you. What I did after I built that AR was first buy AE 55gr because it was el-cheapo. I bought two boxes of 250. But when they sucked ass, I relegated them to my Savage 223 bolt gun and tried heavier ammo. The really heavy Hornady superperformance match, the Black Hills red box and blue box and the Federal premium berger have done really well for me out to 500. The AE 55 won't even get me ringing the 6" plates at 400 or 500.
Next time I build I guess it will probably be a 6.5CR.

It would be interesting to see what your results would be with the Hornady, Black Hills and Federal in 55 grain.

You know - I didn't even think to try that! As soon as I didn't get the results I wanted, I talked to someone that said it was due to the 1:7 twist and to just go to a much heavier bullet. That solved it for me.
