Picked up this 1954 Remington 512 at a small shop in VT. Keeping it original so no sanding of stock or rebluing. Just a deep clean restoration. Even keeping chipped buttplate.

Bolt is sitting in 100% Ballistol. I like the case hardening color on it so dont want to affect that at all.
Stock laquer only being removed with citrusstrip. I plan on finishing with BLO and gun wax.
Barrel, action and magazine plunger soaked heavily in CLP before detailed cleaning.
Yeah I think so. The period scope that was on it was not usable at all. Nice decoration piece maybe for a room.

The 'boiled' linseed oil you buy at the hardware will never dry. You can make it into a varnish though. Boil a cup of it down so it is thicker, do this outside and be careful you don't get a flash fire into the oil itself. After you get about twice the thickness or a little less remove it from the heat and let it cool down some, now you have real boiled linseed oil, the h'ware stuff is pressed, add a capful of turpentine, the older the better, this will act as a dryer, even with this you really have to apply several thin coats and hang it in direct sunlight to make it cure properly. Slather on the first coat and rub it into the wood, the friction of your hand rubbing helps it penetrate, let it hang out of the sun for fifteen to thirty minutes and wipe off the excess and hang in the sun, there after just dab the oil with a finger and rub it out as far as it will go, dab again till the stock is coated with a very thin layer of oil, hang in the direct sun, repeat as many times as needed.

Pretty accurate shooters with out scope 
Something about the old ones and the history we most likely will never know about them. The dust and old fouling was incredible on this. Can't say I ever saw one that bad but the bore looks great and it functioned well considering all the build up on it. Nothing like a diamond in the rough.
My favorite rifle is my Winchester .22 bolt single shot made in 1947. I can't remember the model number. I shoot every thursday with it at a .22 competition unless I am working (like I am now). Iron sights. Love it.
Less is more sometimes....not usually with firearms but when it comes to a favorite that could go out the window.

I believe that the Lyman peep sights were popular back then too. I picked up and mounted period correct 4x scopes and OEM peep sights on a couple of my Vintage Mossberg .22 rifles.

Mine has a peep. It's truly an amazing gun. I shot a 260 the other day out of 300. By far the best on the line without a scope.
Stock looking good just after citrusstrip laquer removal. Wood grain is really nice.
Bolt nice and clean after sitting in Ballistol for 2 days....a few tooth picks later.

After 4 hours of cleaning the barrel, plunger and action. Just have to work on the stock and assemble.

So it was on my mind since I forget to ask about any known history when I bought it, I called gun store today about the Remy 512 . Dealer said the gun was brought in from a guy who got it from a family he knew and it sat in his closet for years. It was owned by an old man who bought it new in '54 and he had died. So it was always a Vt gun. Cool to know. I guess I am the 3rd owner for this 63yo rifle.
I am on the 3rd coat of BLO an it's looking better than expected. Probably stop at 5 coats and apply gun wax. I am taking pictures after each coat and noticing the subtle difference in tone and grain each time.

So after looking at it, this Weaver K10 scope (Original USA Weaver Co ) is fully functional. This also is exactly from the period as they were initially made in 1950. Figured this was bought with the rifle or shortly after. Originally thinking the crosshairs were shifted, I found out these are not auto centered crosshairs and move with elevation and windage. Auto centered crosshairs were 1st released in 1956. K10 was originally $60 when they came out and go for about that now in this VG condition. So, I'm going to clean her up and use it for the gun it came with. It's fairly clear glass considering its 60+ yo.

Yeah I want to use this for the March challenge as well. On 5th coat of BLO. Probably do another tonight. As long as I see a subtle difference in the finish & grain I keeping doing another. I've been taking a picture after each coat to look for difference. I want to post a collage so the forum can see how BLO changes it.
Finally finished the project. After doing at least something everyday on it for the past 1 & 1/2 weeks. 6 coats of BLO later and some wax on top of that. Maybe give it a test run tomorrow if time allows.
