That's normal. The brass is hitting the op rod. The Garand will spin a cartridge around as it ejects and that beats up the brass a bit. Check out this video:

When I was a young man my father would bring home buckets of 06 from the matches...about 1/4 of them would have the mouth dented and they all had crimped primer pockets , what a pain. I sold enough processed brass to buy my first rifle an m44us.
