My Sons Birthday Today....

My oldest turns 9 today and hes been showing an increased interest in shooting sports. So unbeknownst to his mother I bought him a Crossman pump BB gun with a tub of BB's and a cool looking package of targets. A couple years back I came across a great deal on a 20ga Remington 11-87, thought that it would be a great kids shotgun but hes still not quite big enough to shoulder it, and I don't wanna sour him on recoil. I remember my first BB gun and the hours of entertainment it brought... Hope he likes it

A nice single-shot 22 would be a great addition once he gets the bb gun down. I started my 4 year old grandson out on a Red Ryder BB Gun then swithched him over to a Gamo Pellet Gun then on to a 22 single-shot then on to a 22lr pistol.

hes shot my old Marlin 60 before but that means packing up heading to the range, with the BB gun we have enough room in the backyard to take it out, and he'll be more apt to use it

When we go shooting we have to go up in the cascade mountains to shoot regular firearms, we have two red Ryder BB Guns and the Gamo Big Cat 1,200 pelletgun we shoot in the back yard.
To go shoot the regular guns it is from 15 miles to just about 50 miles one way. I have four spots that I like to shoot at. We pick up our trash as we make it (coke cans filled with water,milk jugs and other thing we use as targets).

It's a great day to spend with the young ones out in the wilderness with no one else around.

For my guy's 9th, I picked up a nice Henry Lever action, 22. He is 13 now and that is still his favorite gun.

we got home from birthday dinner a little bit later then normal school day bedtime so he didn't get to shoot it but he definitely had an ear to ear grin when he opened it. My wife on the other hand gave me a huge stink eye and was mildly pissed. Expect a range report within the next day or two.

When I let the grandson shoot the bb gun or pellet gun in the back yard I fill up empty coke cans with water for his targets. the pellet gun will split the cans.

Great gift. A friend of mine got something like that when we were around that age, maybe slightly older, and we were playing some game across the street in the playground. One of our other friends got a hold of it and from about 15' away he shot it towards my friend he took it from hitting him right in the corner of the eye. Kid lost peripheral vision in that eye. Had to wear an eye patch for a while. We thought it was pretty gnarly, but looking back on it, that had to suck. Goes without saying to go over safety precautions and even though it's a bb it can still hurt kids, so never point it at anyone, at least not in the face. I feel silly bringing it up and I'm knocking on wood, but rather you'd rather hear tales of others than been sitting in the E.R., that's for sure.

ok we took the BB gun out a day or two ago, before the monsoon hit, and used my archery block as a backstop. We set up some paper targets and some shaken up pop cans as "reactive" targets. Cheap little thing works pretty damn good. His face lit up with an ear to ear grin when he saw the pop can spray soda everywhere from a hit. Guess it was a hit, cant wait to get him a 22LR now

When we were kids about your sons age my brothers and would set up a bag full of plastic army soldiers and see who could hit the most. Talk about reactive targets. Getting picked off with a brass BB sent those suckers flying.

Happy best birthday ever, both his being 9 and him getting a bb gun! I think the ninth birthday is a milestone in a person's life as it is the final one in the single digits. It is fitting you gave him such a special gift to celebrate it.



A gift suggestion for his 10th birthday: M14Y Youth Rifle | Armscor International, Inc. I picked up one for my son's birthday present for either his 9th or 10th birthday. We still have it 17 or 18 years later. Nice little shooter and well made (at least back then). Fit him well back then too since it is a youth model.

I remember not only shooting them but blowing them up with firecrackers and M-80s. Sometimes burning them with lighter fluid or model airplane glue and watching em melt away to just about a bit of charred nothing was also a bit of fun on an otherwise boring day. Ah - childhood - it was a wonderfully fun time.
