Cougar with a short tail wouldn't be the first, easy to get bitten off in a tussle with something else. Seen short tail cougars on NatGEO a few times.
Curled tail and square body. The second car pics are most likely bobcat, but the original two pics are not bobcat.
Analyze its scat?WTF are we,zoologists? I dont think anybody can argue that they are not bobcats, but they are very large, and to me at least, unusual for bobcats.I've seen a few bobcats over the years, none were as large as these. It's not a cougar.
If it was, you could easily verify that by identifying tracks and analyzing its scat. But when these threads come up, no one ever does that. Instead we get fuzzy pictures and vague conjecture.
Likely a bobcat.

The people who go down these rabbit holes are one step removed from the big-foot fan clubs, IMHO.
Ok,what would you see in a bobcats shit that would be different from a cougars?
Good one.I saw some bear shit this spring that looked like he wrapped his turd in squirrel fur.Bobcat fur in cougar shit.
Sorry, not a fake. It is from my neighbor's cell phone this afternoon and is the second sighting of this cat in a week. Here is a shot from last week from my BIL cell phone. I had no camera with me. In this shot it has a local pet cat in its jaws.

A couple Local Town and County workers, who saw pictures from four of our sightings said the State released some special purpose bobcats, on the QT, as an experiment in deer population control. They believe the pics are likely bobcats of that ilk. I am skeptical but ya never know, especially in light the damn cat was at least border collie size and maybe twice the weight the DEC claims for indigenous NY male bobcats. I want to get some better pics.Pretty sure this one is a Bobcat.
There are cougars in nys. They have been documented here and the DEC even admits it. Here’s proof. Facts About Cougars In The AdirondacksActually yes you can get a good read on an animal by looking at its scat. Hunters do that all the time.
Every one of these threads has a few conspiracy theorists getting spun up over fuzzy pictures and anecdotal 'I've never seen that before' explanations.
It's moronic.
Cougar have passed through NY (there is at least 1 document case). There is absolutely no evidence that they live in in this region of North America. The photo's above, though they are crappy, show a bobcat (the truncated tail is pretty easy to identify). If someone wants to prove otherwise, they'll need to provide some credible evidence. There is nothing in the above posts that I would consider to be credible evidence.
