So, half the people who would currently wait till stopped are going to say "fuck it, no point now" and text while driving again.

If they are stopped, they cannot cause an accident by not paying attention. If they are illegally stopping somewhere it is prohibited, then that's already ticketable.

The more BS laws on the books, the less respect there will be for any of them.

I have to respectfully disagree. I was behind some douchenozzle who was texting while stopped at a red light and who also didn't go when the light turned green as a result. I almost got creamed when another car came barreling toward us to what likely appeared to him as a car and a motorcycle (me) accelerating through said green light. If it wasn't for me seeing him coming, and more so him swerving, I'd be dead. I hate superfluous laws as much as the next guy, and I'll likely get flamed for this, but if you're on the roadway, moving or not, you shouldn't be texting. And since people aren't smart enough to realize this, lawmakers sometimes make laws to protect us from ourselves.

Of course the same issue applies if the guy stalls his car, breaks down, and a variety of other things, so the law wouldn't have saved you in any of those scenarios.

You may be right, but reading the article indicated that the loophole refers to being stopped at a red light and not actually moving. I think it's complete bs if they would make it illegal to pull into a lot to safely send a text message.

As for the other circumstances that would prevent someone from pulling away from a light in a timely manner, I would be much more likely to pull around them. Wouldn't necessarily do that with a texter cuz who knows when they'll pull their head out of their ass. Plus, how many times have you sat behind someone at a light waiting for them to figure out that the light has turned green? I'll bet it's easily tenfold greater than someone who's broken down or stalled or whatever.

But lets be realistic, there are about 1 LEO for every 5 miles of road. On the thruway there is about one trooper for every 25 miles. Your chance of getting caught are pretty slim

The accident would not have been the stopped drivers fault anymore than it would have if his car stalled.

Blocking traffic like that is already ticketable I believe, no need to make it "doubly ticketable". What is it with people who think the answer to a law being ignored is another law ?

This only proves that the cell phone law is a money grab.
Too many cases were being thrown out because the cop wrote a ticket to someone playing with a phone or Nav unit or what ever while they were stopped at a light. Of course they will put some bs safety thing to it. But in the end it is about mo money. Just like seatbelts.
Also remember that using a cellphone or GPS while driving is not illegal in all states.

Think of the Lieutenant at roll call. Ok boys and girls. Keep an eye out for those out of state plates at red lights. If they pick up their electronic device pounce on them like white on rice. Easy money!!!!!

I don't care who's fault it would've been, only that people shouldn't be stupid enough to think that texting while on a roadway is in any way advisable.

Btw, I never said I agree with the law, just identified the reason why so many seemingly senseless laws are passed in the first place. Because people are too dumb to do the right thing in the first place. Doesn't make the law right, just explains their rationale for it, as flawed as it may be. There was a big pissing match at the old forum if I remember about not clearing your car of snow before driving. Needed law? No. Should it be common sense? You decide.
